The new that I got this morning was that the Seaplane Base grand opening this Saturday has a limited fly over for 3 'Progressive' pilots and no one else. That is scheduled for 12:15 and then later in the day at 1 PM there is to be an 'aerobatic airshow' till about 2 pm. Furthermore, when talking to the 'power that be' that shoreline parking for Seareys will be used up by boats by that time of day and that the new ramp to the new parking lot is being used by their 'classic car show' people. ( nice to be wanted isn't it?) Soooo it apperrs that we are 'all dressed up and nowhere to go on Saturday...... Unless we re-group and try a trip to 'Gator Joes' or some other destination. Any ideas anyone, or should we just save ourselves for Garners on Sunday.
Bob Toerner 859-992-4909

Well if they don't want us, fine - guess we should just go somewhere else. I was planning to attend, but if they don't want us, let's do something else. As the outsider, I have no idea what the options are, but am open to what ever. What say you???

I just recieved a newsletter from SPA promoting the seaplane base saying there will be a huge parking lot and beach for seaplanes to park... I am flying up there today to check things out...will let everyone know any info I get. I will be going early saturday (like 9am-10am) to try to get a spot on the beach with 'Splash'.

OK, as of 9am on Friday here is the scoop. A TFR will be issued for the Tavares area for most of Saturday. There will be an airshow at 11 AM and at 3 PM over Lake Dora. The official ribbon cutting is at 1PM done by a Seaplane cuttng the ribbon with it's prop.
There will be a classic car show from 10 AM to 4 PM. and two Country bands will perform. Little Texas and Restless Heart starting at 7:30 pm. Water taxis will operate from 8 am till midnight from Mt Dora ( East end of lake) to Tavares on the west. For you Daredevils out there will be a Quilt Show in City Hall at 10 AM.
The weather calls 'breezy' conditions on Saturday. I was also alerted to the fact that a certain FAA official will be attending who has a reputation of being a bit of a PRI__ _. So, lets just save our flying energy for Garners on Sunday.

Any more info on the TFR? When does it start and where does it extend?

I agree, they are having a grand opening for the SEAPLANE Base and they are doing a lot to keep us out. I may fly by from a distance but with out much beach area for me ( I can't get my manual gear down in the water), I am out. I will just save the time for Sunday, which is going to be a lot more fun anyway. See you all there.

I think the Grand Opening will be to full to park a plane but after that, It will be a great place to go for a burger and shop and see the boats and planes

Okay guys, I just got back from Tavares. While I was there, I spoke with the head honcho that runs the avaiation division of the marina/seaplane base. He is a Super Cub floatplane owner and was a pleasure to speak to. I explained all of our concerns and he cleared everything up for me. Here is what he told me:

There is absolutely no TFR, just a no fly zone box that is hot only during the aerobatics show.
To his knowledge, there will be no FAA reps present- That was the first time he had heard about that and said ' If there was an FAA rep present, I would know about it'.
The city WANTS ALL Seareys and other seaplanes present for the event-he told me a MILLION times 'EVERYONE is welcome' 'Please, get everyone here that you can get'.
If you want parking, the ramp will be closed, but there is plenty of beach parking for seaplanes. If it is full, look further east for more shoreline. He will be monitoring traffic on 122.75.

Daniel, thanks for the update. I will probably give it a try. If there is no parking I guess I will just have to keep on flying and having fun in the air.

I plan on getting there between 9am and 10am...parking is first come first serve

i just flew to the tavares seaplane base myself. daniel is absolutely right! they want all of us there! as far as i can remember, the man we talked to said they only wanted sterile airspace between 11-12 and 3-4pm because of airshows...no TFR! there is plenty of parking for seareys on the shore. i hope to see some of you there!!!

Wow...What a great time today at Tavares...The folks loved the seaplanes, but even more, the City was very pleased with the turn out. I even met a few Seareyers I havent met before. Nice meeting Jeff Arnold, Dave Martin Don Laughlin and Joe Varner...Can't wait for tomorrow. I think I saw Dan Nickens fly over too.

Here are some photos from the April 10 grand opening of the Tavares Seaplane Base that featured an air show, Gov. Crist, a BBQ cookoff contest, new kids water park, sightseeing train, classic car show, good cheer and great weather. A sandy beach is yet to be installed along the waterfront. There are a few restaurants to visit too. It will be a funplace to fly our SeaReys to and it's only a couple of miles from the new Progressive Aerodyne plant. Attachments:

Looks like a great facility. Does it have a seaport identifier that would be in a Garmin data base?

Lee Pfingston - Apr 12,2010 Viewers | Reply
Brand new Identifier issued maybe a week ago, in the newspaper, did not pay enough attention

Kenneth Leonard - Apr 12,2010 Viewers | Reply
They approved giving an identifier, but I do not believe it has been issued yet.
