Here's a little video of a short flight last evening, just as the sun was going down: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1vSJ9Q4jrs

Very nicely done, Don. Maybe even better if you added more real-time narration??

Good idea, Frank. I can walk and chew gum at the same time, but not sure about flying and narrating...

Nice video Don. About how much altitude did you lose in the stall?

Don Maxwell - Aug 22,2011 Viewers | Reply
You have sharp eyes, Jerry. The total altitude loss shown in that part of the video was probably about 500 feet. I wanted to come down quickly to be sure of enough light to see the water when landing--did a wingover just for fun and pulled the power off before the halfway point, thinking to keep the speed low, and the pull at the end was slow and easy to keep the nose down. But I did the power reduction too soon, and it stalled briefly before the wings got unloaded. (The rest of the answer is too technical for this site, but I'll email it to you.)

wow great idea for night water landings.

Beautiful! Send some this way, Eric. To my eyes, the light down on the water was slightly dimmer than the camera made out, but there was plenty of it to land safely. Ten minutes later it might have been just a teeeensy bit darker than comfortable, especially if the wind had died back down.

Seems to me that a little darkness never held you back. Dave King still talks about that evening.

Aw, Dave, I never would have learned to do night water landings without Dave King's encouragement. But it really wasn't dark out on the water that evening at Turtle Cove. This one was about the same, maybe slightly lighter.

Eric's floating lanterns would be great for a real night landing--if anybody were desperate enough to do one.
