Hey Don, what's blowing. Are you and Carol going to head for high ground inland.

Don Maxwell - Aug 25,2011 Viewers | Reply
We're staying put, Russ--unless Irene turns west from the predicted path.

Right now they say it's heading straight for First Flight Airport and Kitty Hawk Kites--the Outer Banks of NC. If that's where it goes, the eye will stay a good 100 miles east of us, maybe more. That will probably bring us a whole lot of rain but winds no more than 50 mph. Our biggest worry then will be the storm surge roaring up the James River from the ocean. We're at the western end of the open part, where the river narrows and turns north, and the water is relatively shallow, so we might get high tides a good 10 feet higher than normal. (I'm guessing from what the neighbors tell us.) The house is at least 5 feet higher than that and the ground floor is probably at least 8 feet higher, so we should be okay unless the roof blows off. No telling what will become of the beach, though. It should be an interesting weekend.

We had a splash-in cook-out planned for Saturday, but it looks like the wind will already be a bit strong by then, so we'll probably postpone it.

Sometimes I live in the country,
Sometimes I live in town,
And sometimes I take a great notion
To jump in the river and drown.

Well, Irene, good night,
Irene, good night.
Good night, Irene, good night, Irene,
I'll see you in my dreams.

Frank, I built a 2000 sqf. block hanger with the house here on Lake Arietta. It's about 1:00 pm Sat and Irene is about 60 miles
from Don. Hang on to Carol Don hope your doing ok.

We're fine, thanks. The main storm is to the east. Wind has shifted to N and the heaviest rain has let up. Wind speed is about 35G50 now and should drop off somewhat over night. The house is fine--only one small leak (kitchen ceiling). The pier has lost a lot of its decking--water was above it--but the structure seems okay. The beach is still under water. No electric power, but we have a small generator to run essential things. Fun, like camping.

Don and Carol, you just survived a hurricane. We had a band of thunder storms go through here this afternoon that was part of the outflow from Irene.

One of my sons, Rhett, is just S E of Montreal. The caught the tail end and have trees down and some property damage. His brand new car was missed, his mate's banger got a branch on the roof. Apparently the dents are an improvement!

Here in BC we are having the first three sunny days in a row this year!

Hey Don, I guess the power's out and you can't charge your IPhone? We're lucky down here that Irene stayed off the east-coast but I hear that Florida's homeowners insurance rates are going up because you got the storm. We did get a outflow storm that came through here Sat that dropped over 6 inches of rain in just a couple of hrs. In Winter Haven cars were floating down some of the streets with people climbing out of their car windows and sitting on the roofs of their car while they floated down the street. Attachments:

We're fine, Russ, but the power is still out, and the cellphone service is very slow when it isn't
completely out. We're hoping to have power in a day or so. Started the pier repairs today.

Don Maxwell - Aug 30,2011 Viewers | Reply
Dennis, the Large Marge Party Barge and Self-Propelled Seaplane Tender is safe and sound up on the boat lift. Unfortunately, there are still three sections of the pier to repair before we can get out that far, and the wiring to restore before the lift can lower her back down to the billows.
Well, that and restoringall the downed power lines in the area.

Amen. I was stuck at Newark airport but luckily had a hotel room side-on to the wind, so I had a great spot to watch the storm. Climbing out Monday morning we all had our noses pressed to the windows, the flooding from the air was terrible to see.
Russ, I was just writing this when the power went out last Saturday. The power just came on about ten minutes ago, and when I started Firefox up again it still had the text in the 'post': window.

[Saturday, 27 Aug] We may get lucky. The forecast high tide was at 2:19, but the peak wind isn't expected here until after 5--meaning it will more or less coincide with the forecast low tide. The wind is from the north now, which is also good, as the fetch from the north is only about 1.5 or 2 miles. From the east it's about 7 miles, so an east wind would be worse. I don't know what the wind speed is because my Dwyer wind meter got wet this morning and the little ball won't move until it dries out. Before it filled up with water it showed 28G38, but the wind is probably a bit stronger by now.

Here's a brief video made at about 2:30. The scale? Well, the Large Marge Party Barge and Self-Propelled Seaplane Tender is up on the boat lift. She's 8 feet by 12. Normally, the water at high tide is about 2.3 or 3 feet below the pier.

Here's how the pier looked the next morning. The low island beyond the end of the pier is about 2,000 feet out. The far shore is about 1.5 miles. Attachments:
