I'm watching the weather. Only 1.5 hours or so from here.
Here's ET's email with more details:
We are excited to invited all seaplane pilots to our 1st South Carolina Splash-In. We picked a beautiful beach in Lake Murray, west of Columbia, S.C. This is the same lake that back in WWII Jimmy Doolittle practiced with his pilots for the Tokyo Raid! In fact, just recently they recovered from the depths a B-25! We are planning this fun event for April 14, 9 am- 4 pm. It'll be an easy, relaxed day, just to get to know each other, have some BBQ Dead Birds, Burgers & Hot Dogs, and plan future Splash-Ins. Coordinates are N34.02'07' W81.19'11'. Just look for the Seabees on the beach ( see pictures below). Point of Contacts (POCs) are Edgar ET Tello (794)491-3152, & Steve Mestler (803) 446-1224. More information as we get closer to April 14. But please call/text/email me ASAP so I can plan for food & drinks (sorry, no beer or rum, at least for the pilots).

Edgar ET Tello
SC, NC & VA SPA Director
Bump. ET says 6 or 7 seaplanes so far. He needs to know if you are coming so he can plan the food.

I'm planning to be there. Don't know yet if I will have a passenger. Weather looks good!

No kidding. Not too far from me. I'll be driving in.

That's great Mark. Look forward to meeting you. Too bad you aren't bringing your airplane. I'd enjoy checking out your Stingrey (or is that Stingray?)

Mark Alan MacKinnon - Apr 12,2012 Viewers | Reply
    Stingray.

I've found out it's not exactly a drive-to spot. I can park near the Ranger station and walk a ways to the beach (the answer I got from the guys running it). The beach is on a partial island. So it's not clear to me how difficult the access is if you're not flying in.

Sooo.....anyone flying north to it, who wouldn't mind picking up a gas-sharing passenger? If there is and you're planning on fuel, there's Ridgeland (3J1), but their 100LL price is always high, now $5.89. A better choice is Allendale (88J) at $5.30, which is also a little closer to me. (According to 100LL.com).

Mark, Columbia Metropolitan (CAE) is the nearest airport. If you want to drive there, I could run over and pick you up and then take you back in the afternoon.

Thanks Jeff....Steve's house is on another lake; I'm going there, and flying in with him in his Seabee after they drop stuff off at the beach. First time for me in a Seabee, I'm looking forward to it.

That's great, Mark. I'm sure you will enjoy the Seabee. I've flown in ET's and it was a cool experience. Feels like a VERY BIG plane. See you Saturday.

Well done, Jeff! The second one may be the overall best pic of the day.
See, the Florida gang can't have all the fun.
When I hopped into Steve's Seabee, he had it angled out so that I had to wade out waist deep to get in. I forgot I had my new digital camera in my pocket. It got soaked. Fortunately, the memory card wasn't affected, and I have a slot for it in my laptop, so the pics were ok. But my camera is still in a ziploc baggy filled with rice. This is a trick I read about some time ago; the rice acts like a desiccant and can dry out electronics dropped in the water. Steve also soaked his cellphone, so he had his in a rice baggy too when I left his place.

Just to be fair to the ladies on this site, I thought I'd post a picture of Mellisa (Seabee driver's wife) and some dude she found wondering on the beach. I don't see it but she thought he was picture worthy. Kind of looks like Don Maxwell to me. Attachments:

Yep. Me and Sammie finally made it into a magazine. So what if they got my point of origin wrong (NC nor VA). I'm originally from VA so I guess that is what they meant.
