With an honest intent to buy a Sea Rey, I first e-mailed PA in Florida... Not once, but three
times. After a response from PA that I would soon receive full purchase information and pricing
information on the Sea Rey, I now have waited three weeks with no response.
I then contacted Tom at Calif. Sea Rey who is more than anxious to have me summit a deposit,
but at least seems to be able to communicate with the factory to some degree. My hopes are
that this type of used car sales tactics will eventually lead to a professional contract to purchase
a new machine from PA. I welcome any ideas on how to deal with a company that appears to be
inept of professional sales protocol ? I do thank Tom ( CA Sea Rey) for his timely and
professional responses to my inquiries, since he can only relay the fractional information that PA
supplies him.
I also welcome your opinion on the choice of a 912 or 914 turbo Rotax engine.

Thank You
Steve
The decision to buy something like the Searey takes some time but when you've made your choice you want it now. Steve, after you get to spend your money the waiting really begins. I've owned a Searey for over 16 years now, and have a large gathering each year at my house in Florida, this year will be the 14th. Garner's Landing Searey Gathering. Let me warn you, this whole process will take time and you may get frustrated at times, just ask my wife. All I can say is, hang in there, you'll never regret it.

Steve, I am a Canadian SeaRey Dealer, so take my advice with a grain of salt

First of all, the Factory is currently undergoing huge growing pains in staff and product. They need to be cut a little slack
Nevertheless you will never pay premium if you purchase your SeaRey through a local dealer such as Tom. The huge hidden benefit is expert local support during your purchase, build and ownership. Long term dealers such as Tom, know the product even better than some of PA's staff. They will stay on top of your order. They will give you excellent advice on options whether purchased through PA or elsewhere. And they will know where the fun is once you start flying..

Thank you for the support and advice. Tom is working very hard to help me, and I feel
great about his knowledge and guidance . After flying forty years + I feel I know a neat
airplane when I see one, and I'm confident the Sea Rey is going to be it... As much as I
am looking forward to the airplane eventually, I too am looking forward to joining the group
of folks that fly her.

Why not just phone them, Steve? That's always the best way. The main number is 352-253-0108.

As for the engine choice, both the 100 hp 912S and the 115 hp 914 are proven, reliable engines. The 914 costs about $10k more than the 912S and weighs slightly more. The choice depends mostly on personal preference and operating altitude. I've been very happy with my 914 for more than 1100 hours so far, but for almost all purposes the 912S is as useful and less complex.

Thank you, think I'll bite the bullet and get the 914 for Lake Tahoe days.

Steve, if I can give you a hand I'd be glad to drive over to the
factory and sit with them through the contract process. It's true
they are in a growth spurt - I went to an open house last month
and the enthusiasm was evident. Incidentally, my Cub appears
to be sold so I may be closer to my SeaRey too.

-Alex Nelon

Oh thanks, But Tom at Calif. Sea Rey has my purchase 100% in hand. Today the Deposit
goes out for a new Elite ! Step one to the Birth of my new machine ! The Adventure
Begins !

...and Steve, I will also make sure you are 100% thrilled with your purchase! PA will get their ducks in a row very soon. It's the classic battle of going to market before everything is set and generating cash flow so that they can actually get there. The great folks at PA will make it up to you and you will enjoy the SeaRey community as well.

Steve - you won't regret going with the Searey. (I'm not a dealer but have been flying mine since 2006) The dealers I know (John D and Tom B) are both trustworthy and I wouldn't hesitate to go through them. Yes, the factory can be frustrating but as Russ says, stick it out. Once the deposit is down, ensure Tom gets you onto the owners site (the tech site).

Thank You- I'm already planning my trip from Florida to California... Deposit is sent and I'm
really excited about the whole thing! Yes Tom is most helpful, and we are well on our way
to owning a new Elite ! Looking forward to getting on to the Tech site to start learning
everything I can.

I just visited the PA facility last Thursday and they are in the throws of
ramping up their production line with number of SRs in various stages
of build. It take time to make such a fine aircraft. When you visit
PA learn as much as you can, and I would suggest you seek out a local
SR dealer, since John's advice is right on. securing your first SR is
only the start of owning one. There have been past cases of SR
builders who realize that this airplane no simple matter, so much so
that they sold them. You need to learn everything you can about it's
technical operations, how to fly it, how To outfit it, and how to take care
of it. These are not easy tasks and will take considerable self initiative
to do, since there no single source for that information. That is where
seeking out local SR support and reading all of the MyFamily
Technical site will prove to be a critical.

Steve Young - Mar 16,2013 Viewers | Reply
Yes all of that would be normal learning for any new A/C. Being able to access the tech site will of
course be nice when I'm allowed to do so. I am not an SR builder, only a buyer of a complete airplane.
The Elite seems to come well outfitted with little choice for any additions or changes. Thanks for the
input.

    Hey Steve!!
I feel your pain!! I tried several attempts to get them to take me seriously that I wanted to purchase a
Searey, for example, going over to PA and also trying to talk to a salesman at the Sebring Florida show.
Numerous phone calls to the company with no reply. Finally, I discovered John Dunlop, Canadian
dealer, then things got moving. My plane got ordered, after the deposit, in a timely manner. John was
great to deal with, 100 percent!! Hopefully the fella from CA is as good as John, you will have no
problem. I ordered the 914 motor and think about paint scheme now as it is another added cost.
I did purchase a used Searey as the wait is unbearable, especially when I am excited about flying, and
now a new pilot. Delivery of new plane hopefully within 30 days!!
Good luck in your endeavor!!
Duane Hunt

Welcome Duane! and thank you. (The fella from CA is better!

Duane- With one Canadian and one Californian sales reps on our side I think we have
Hacked the Sea Rey Sales Barrier and are IN! I'm very confident and pleased with the
business ethics of the 'fella from CA' ! (-:

    Guys,

WADR to John & Tom, I started building my SeaRey in April
2010, and it’s my first full sized airplane build. I purchased
directly through the factory (John D was a factory Rep at the
time and helped me considerably), but after that floundered
at the lack of post-sales support.

Last year while down at Sun n Fun I paid a visit to Jim
Ratte, who I had heard only great things about through SnD
& STS. Jim & I hit it off, and I am now getting excellent
builders assist from him. Living and building in Bellingham
WA, my schedule is often at conflict with PA’s hours, but
many times I’ve texted or emailed Jim with a question “after
hours” and received a reply within a few minutes. He’s
extremely patient with my often dumb questions, willing to
differentiate between a safety of flight and a “style”
disagreement when it comes to something I want on my
airplane, and a good, honest man. (I believe he also built “Puff”, Richard Bach’s airplane)

Jim is a full time SeaRey dealer and builder, I’ve made a few visits to him and I’ve found I’m not the only SeaRey pilot who travels a great distance to seek his advice or to have him work on ‘Reys. He’s currently building my wiring harness, and will do
the first flight.

Check him out. http://www.seareyspecialist.com/

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Steve
http://seareybuild.blogspot.in/

Yeah, I second Steve's recommendation. Jim is an honest, professional and very knowledgeable builder.
