A wonderful Searey Day. Helen had the great idea to go to the <br />27th annual Bernie Fowler Patuxent River Wade In <br /><a href="http://www.jefpat.org/Documents/2014-Wade%20In.pdf">http://www.jefpat.org/Documents/2014-Wade%20In.pdf</a> <br />What is the “Sneaker Index”?? An annual measurement of <br />water quality based on how far Mr. Fowler can wade into the river <br />while still being able to see his white high-top sneakers. The farther <br />he can wade the better the clarity and condition of the water. <br />Most of the local politicians, state senators and representatives <br />were in attendance along with the keeper of the river, DNR, park <br />and local sheriff. The Searey was so welcomed that former <br />Senator Bernie Fowler stated that we must come again next year <br />when they highlighted us being in attendance along with the <br />dignitaries, conservationists and biologists. Very positive PR for <br />Seareys in MD. The beach has firm sand and room for more<br />Seareys next year.

Rats. I've heard about that event but had no idea of where or when--would have gone if I'd known. Instead I flew down the James to chat with Tommy Crump.<br /><br />So, Buck, how muddy was it there today?

We should plan on going next year. Before the event we beached at Stoney's on nearby Broome's Island for lunch. Sand strip near the restaurant was narrow and soft with a wood sea wall. I needed Helen's stool under one of my tires to get back off the restaurant beach. If you look closely at the picture you can just make out that his coveralls are wet to just above his knee. During the ceremony Bernie Fowler donated his outfit and original white sneakers that have over 100 tests of the "Sneaker Index" to be part of a new exhibit this summer at Calvert Marine Museum on Solomons Island.<!-- >'"><br><font color=red size=6>' or > missing in user HTML. Frank, there is a chart of the yearly results at http://www.mdp.state.md.us/OurWork/FowlerWadeIn.shtml Results are much better than when he started 27 years ago, but not as good as during a stretch in the 90s. He does it on a preselected day without regard to recent rains, winds or local conditions.
