Instead of attaching the front of the retraction spring firmly to the frame I hooked mine to a cable. This cable goes around a pulley behind the fuel tank, another above the left gear and a third by my left foot. It comes back up the sloping tube by my left arm and has two hooks to which it can attach about 16' apart. The aft hook puts the normal tension in the spring and the front hook completely relaxes it. This position allows an easy push on the gear lever to extend even the big tires into the water as you are not fighting the spring anymore.
To retract, first pull the cable's handle to the aft stud to reset the tension in the spring and the gear comes up easily.
Say goodbye to the cost, weight, and aft CG shift of the hydraulic system - maybe the alternator, too.
