What if...you filled in the area (leaving space for elevator tubes) under the seats with floatation foam right up to touching the seat when it has weight in it? That would be light and serve the double purpose of floatation and energy absorption without having to replace the seats. If you put in bucket seats, it would still work. <br /><br />I haven't got a good idea for protection from landing gear...C-17 armor is too heavy. Maybe just a piece of plywood behind the seat?

This seems like a good idea. If carefully designed, it would have another benefit - it would keep foreign objects out of the area under the seat. <br /><br />I have often thought that it would not take much for something to get lodged in between the bottom of the control stick and the floor, possibly locking things up. I used to fly RAF Chipmunks, which had the same problem. Anyone caught leaving dispersal without emptying their pockets would be grounded for the day...
