Tuesday, April 12, 2005
9:01 AM on Tuesday, April 12, 2005
Seaplanes are a big splash at event
By STEVEN N. LEVINE
steven.levine@newschief.com

AUBURNDALE - Ship Capt. Robert Lee's other vehicle is an oil tanker. His first love is the 900-pound SeaRey float plane he navigated onto Lake Arietta Sunday.
Lee, who is from Ocala, knows stress firsthand, twice maneuvering tankers through the Straits of Hormuz during the first Gulf War. He most recently took a shipload of highly flammable aviation fuel into the U.S. Navy support facility at Diego Garcia.
Lee - just like the Civil War general, he says - slid the single-engine, two-seat SeaRey into Auburndale residents Russ and Lou Ann Garner's yard on Lake Arietta and quickly found a plate of food. A SeaRey enthusiast for the past two years, Lee says he feels freer skimming over the waves in the 115 hp craft, rather than plowing through them.
'Stress is stress, no matter how you look at it. This is fun,' he said while chowing down on a plate of Lou Ann's famous spaghetti. 'There's a very active Internet site for SeaReys. I'm happy to be part of it.'
Russell and Lou Ann are quick to thank their lakeside neighbors for allowing the couple to indulge their fellow SeaRey fliers once a year.
Sunday's Sixth SeaRey Gathering precedes the Sun 'n Fun Fly-in, which gets under way today at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport.
The SeaRey Gathering drew about half of the model's 50 active pilots in Florida, manufacturer representative Kerry Richter said.
The once-a-year Garner's Landing fete is home base for the small white amphibians during the popular fly-in. Nearly two dozen enthusiasts squeezed their 30-foot, 10-inch wingspan planes behind the couple's residence, giving the yard the appearance of a seaplane rookery.
In fact, many SeaRey pilots, like Doug Rogerson of Shelburne, Ontario, fly in mainly to swap stories with the Rey community. For Rogerson, the Sun 'n Fun is an afterthought.
A retired horse trainer, Russ Garner trains a different type of horse power nowadays when he's at the controls of his own SeaRey, which generally stables in the couple's garage.
Russ and Lou met while flying ultralights, but wanted something built for two. Enter the light seaplane, which retails on the preowned market for the price of a luxury car.

http://www.polkonline.com/stories/041205/communitynews_splas
h.shtml
