Kinda funny story...we haven't been shelled for a couple of days now so we're finally out of our armor-thank goodness.<br />However, whenever we find anything suspicious, rather than try to see if it goes bang or try to defuse it, we just blow it up in place or robotically move it to the field between the runways and blow it up. These are called 'controlled detonations'. Sometimes they happen several times a day and they can be quite spectacular. Well...we had a C-17 just touching down as a series of really big controlled dets went off. The dirt & flames went 100' in the air and the pilot landing didn't know it was us doing it. He slammed on the brakes and left most of his rubber on the runway. I suspect he might have needed some new shorts after that. We got a laugh out of that but I've asked the tower to warn any aircraft close to the field prior to blowing stuff up. Duh.

The tower personnel and the explosive ordinance disposal folks are most definetly NOT under my command. I'm not sure tower is under anyone's command... My people are kicking butt, including under fire, every day and without complaining. They are fantastic and fly in the face of the doomsayers on this generation. I am blessed to have such people. And they love airplanes! What more could you ask?
