Jim Carliccini and I will be taking two LSA aircraft from Florida to California in October and November. The trip corresponds with Jim's arrival for the Copper State Fly In at Casa Grande, AZ and then the AOPA Fly-In at Palm Springs, CA, before flying on to San Francisco and back thru the Grand Canyon and Momument Valley.

The cross America trek will help raise awareness that with enough determination the disabled can do all the things the rest of us can do,
given the will and good training. We are raising money for the Sunshine Foundation, part of Make A Wish / Give Kids The World, the organization that provides terminally ill children a special wish, near the end of their lives.

Jim is the paraplegic that made his solo just a few weeks ago, in a specially modified Airborne Trike, with a Streak III Wing. Jim's trike has a four stroke, Rotax 912-UL, and has hand controls for throttle and front wheel brakes. Jim has no sensation in his lower body and I am flying as his support crew.

I will be flying the FPNA A-22 VALOR, with 80 hp Rotax, four stroke, also. I will fly about 1/4 mile off Jim's right wing and run ahead to check the runways for condition and debris before circling while he lands.

It is the fist time a paraplegic has ever flown across the country in a weight shift aircraft, alone. We are very proud to make this announcement and to have a part in Jim's accomplishment.

We set up a special e-mail for Jim at FPNA. Anyone wishing to encourage him can e-mail hhim at JimC@FPNA.com.

Our route will take us from Sebring, through the panhandle of Florida, along the Gulf Coast and thru Texas, before turning North West to cross thru New Mexico into Arizona and then to California. ANYONE wishing to fly a leg of this trip with us can e-mail me at johnl@FPNA.com and provide information including location and aircraft data.

We will be maintaining a 55 know cruise speed to minimze the strain on Jim and flying at approximately 4500 feet, whenever possible.

    Hi,
Thanks for inquiring about Jim Carlaccini's Flight Across America.

Final Dates and expected Arrival times are still undergoing review and subject to weather . We are currently planning, weather permitting, to leave Florida and stay along the Gulf Coast until we reach the Lafayette, LA area, then turn North West and stop in Jasper, Texas, Midlothian - Waxahachie, TX, Sweetwater, TX, Pecos, TX, then turn Northerly to Cavern City, NM, Alamogordo, NM, Las Cruces, NM to Benson, NM.

After Benson, We stop in Casa Grande, AZ for the Copper State Fly-In and between the fly-in and the AOPA Fly-In at Palm Springs, CA, we are touring thru the Grand Canyon, stopping at the North Rim and Monument Valley, stopping at Page, AZ to fly over Lake Powell and Gouldings - Monument Valley Resort, before flying up to San Francisco and Home the Southern Route due to it being mid-November by then,

Any pilot wishing to accompany us needs to know we will cruise at 55 Knots to minimize Jim's fatigue and stop about every 150 miles for his rest and safety.

We are hoping a lot of pilots form up as we go along and give us a hand on the ground with fuel (the planes burn auto gas so we need to arrange for it to be at the various airports) and ground transportation to and from hotels.

Several of our corporate partners have pledged support for the project and donations to The Sunshine Foundation of Give Kids the World, proving that we are an industry with a real heart for our world. More information will be released about our charitable sponsors soon.

Anyone wishing to sponsor Jim's unprecedented flight, can choose any amount, per mile you wish, realizing the current flight plan is going to be about 7,200 miles total, if all goes well. One-half of all support raised will go to The Sunshine Foundation up to the cost of the trip, then 100% of all additional funds will be donated at the end of the flight.

We are truly hoping to partner with some flying clubs to meet us as we arrive at the many airports and maybe share a meal and swap stories while Jim relaxes and recharges his batteries for the next leg. Hopefully people will want to share a part of the adventure and make memoriesalong with us.

You can contact Jim at his FPNA e-mail: JimC@FPNA.com or surf the sight and see what we are up to at www.FPNA.com.

John Long
Float Planes and Amphibs
Sebring Regional Airport
128 Authority Lane
Sebring, Florida 33870
JohnL@FPNA.com
www.FPNA.com
