I just gotta tell this story. A couple of years ago, when I dunked my plane in the lake, I also drowned my LightSpeed 25XL headset. I sent them back to LightSpeed with a letter telling them what happened. A week later I got it back, completely rebuilt and with a letter appologizing for 'any inconvenience caused by not having your headset'. I was impressed. I never use them because I like my QFRXCc set better but, since Meredith now wants to fly, I started using them again. The performance was so poor, I called their customer service dept to ask about possibly swapping them for another QFRXCc. They asked me to send the 25XL back first so they could 'take a look at it'. I got them back today and here is what they did: replaced the head band, head pad, ear seals and stirrups, replaced both of the audio speakers and the battery box, mic boom assembly - all at no charge. I guess that $600 initial price pays for great customer service down the road. I haven't tried them out yet and I doubt they will work as good in the Searey as the QFRXCc set. If they don't, I'll have an essentially new 25XL for sale.

I've also had good experiences with them. Hard to find a company that will bend over backwards for their customers like this anymore.

I've also had a recent experiece with these guys. I was absolutely amazed by the level of service they provide. The guy who had my headset on the bench called to discuss what he's done so far to ensure he did all that was needed. He decided he'll replace the mic while he's at it.

I'd buy another set from them in a hearbeat.

I just sent my David Clark H10-13.4 back to the factory for a mic boom replacement. I called about ordering one as I was about to install the Headsets, Inc. ANR conversion in it and it needed a new mic boom. Even though it was a year out of warranty, the customer service lady said to send it back and they would do it for free. We'll see how David Clark's customer service compares to LightSpeed's.

Well, DC even beat LightSPEED's service. I sent them a worn out, been dunked in Lake Norman, broken mic boom, smelled like gas H10-13.4. They promised to replace the mic boom for free. Today a brand new in the box H10-13.4 arrived from David Clark - no charge. I kind of hate to tear them apart to install the Headsets Inc ANR kit - but I am anyway.

    Dennis,
One of my DC's is 21 years old and got run over by a car; suppose they'll
send me a new one?

Dennis Scearce - Jan 01,2007 Viewers | Reply
Actually, apon closer inspection, they rebuilt my old one. But, with a new head pad, new ear muffs, new speakers and new mic and boom, it is the same as new. However, I just installed a Headsets, Inc. ANR kit in it so the only DC parts are the case and the mic. I don't know how well the new ANR kit works since I'm recovering from surgery, my sprag clutch is bad and it's raining. It does a good job of attenuating the bass notes on the stereo, though.

Good luck for a speedy recovery--and a new clutch!

Thanks Frank. I'm calling Lockwood today to order the parts and tools. Hopefully, by the time the parts get here, I'll be recovered enough to do the repair. Today is my first official day of retirement and I'm already liking not having to factor in work in all my play activities.

Good news Dennis: Lockwood always has shipped things really fast to me, so your recovery needs to be
just as fast. Congratulations on retirement, you'll soon join the rest of us who realiize we would never have
time for work again.

Yeah. I'm going to have to expand my Searey travel circle to farther than the 30 mile radius around Mooresville that I'm using now.

Well, the sun came out and I got one more crank out of my sprag clutch so I got to try out my David Clarks with the Headsets, Inc conversion this afternoon (Barbara was gone and I declared myself fit to fly). I'd say they are at least as good as the LightSPEED QFRXCc headset. Maybe better. At least as quiet and the sound quality seems better to me. At $169 for the conversion kit, it's the way to go if you have an old set of 13.4s laying around.

I took one of my 2 20XL's to their booth at OSH 2 years ago with a shorted wire on the comm plug. They tested it and said that while there was nothing they coulld do at the show, they'd be glad to fix it if I sent it in. Then the guy offered something I didn't expect... if I sent it in with $100, they'd exchange it for a brand new, top of the line, 30 3G! They allowed me to swap both of the old midrange 20XL for new top of the line models. They've both worked flawlessly for 2 years.

Jim: how do the 30 3Gs work in the Searey. The problem I'm having with the 25XL is it doesn't have as much passive attentuation as the QRFXCc. So the high pitch 5000 rpm Rotax still makes too much noise. I believe the 30 3G doesn't have as much passive attentuation as the QRFXCc either. Right now I'm working on modifying my DC H10-13.4 to the Headsets, Inc ANR and with new mic and new silicone ear pads to see if that isn't a good Searey headset.

Sorry Dennis, Swoosh Too is still under construction. I had my 20 XLs when I flew with Jim Shadoan 2 1/2 years ago at Garner's Gathering and they worked well. I haven't been in a SeaRey, since - even though I live in Mecca! I think there are as many SR's in FL as in the rest of the world...

I remember them being very quiet, though and you can't beat the comfort.

Good luck on your DC mods...

When I get my wing finished, hopefully in the next 2-3 weeks, I can bring the mostly finished hull to my hangar and work on getting the engine mounted and the panel in and start training sessions with Kerry or Paige. Then I can give you a pirep.

Dennis, I have a pair of 30 3Gs and I am really happy with them. Make sure you have some backup batteries with you. It would be nice to be able to phisically compare them with other headsets.

I have to say that I have gotten great service from Bose on my head sets and other stuff

Here's a pirep on my factory rebuilt LightSpeed 25XL. I flew with them today for 30 minutes, then switched to the QFR XCc for 30 minutes. The QFR XCc are much quieter and, to me, more comfortable. And half the cost.
