Some work, Some Play

The tornado of last week swiped Roy Zimmer’s farm. It left his house, but it damaged his barn, the hangar, and trashed the pool enclosure. No worries there, however, because the damage is covered by insurance.

What is not covered by insurance are the many downed trees and fields full of debris. The cleanup will be a massive, long term undertaking. When I mentioned this to Darrell Lynds and Bob Toerner, they immediately offered their muscles and chainsaw. It was such a great idea, I called and asked Roy about it.

Roy is thrilled at the idea of having a bunch of SeaReys fly over for work and play. He said he will provide drinks and lunch. You can even check out his famous Buc XA that flew from Florida to the Amazon. (It survived the storm by hunkering down in the hangar.)

Roy’s farm is located on the west side of Lake Beresford and he has a beautiful seaplane ramp. The plan now is for the SeaRey salvage crews to fly in this Saturday. Bob is bringing his pickup truck and chainsaws (the area has restricted access by road due to the recovery effort).

I’ll post coordinates and the address later. Meanwhile, if you can fly in and help, it will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Dan
Attachments:

I'll try to fly in Saturday am. I won't be able to stay and work as I've got family time constraints for a total of 3 hours free (flying) over the weekend but I do have a monster Husqevarna chainsaw I will loan to a responsible party. I can pick it up later. Does he want it?

Thanks, Ken, but I don't know any responsible SeaRey parties! I'm sure there are some, though. So far Jon, Bob and I are bringing chain saws. Roy has one too. We should be okay unless you just need a good excuse to fly over this way.

The address for you Mapquesting driving types is: 1889 Hontoon Road, Deland, FL. Roy said he would give a heads up to the police. Just tell them you going there and give them Roy's name.

The GPS coordinates of Lake Beresford and Roy's ramp are: 28 deg 59 min 48.96 N and 81 deg 21 min 4.04 W.

Sorry to sound like daddy and I don't mean to imply that all six of you aren't highly qualified but my years in electrical line work is screaming at me to offer this. Please huddle at the beginning of the day and discuss safety. Ideally, chainsaw users should have chaps, leather gloves, leather boots, eye and ear protection. Remember that fallen trees are sometimes spring loaded and can be lethal when cut. Every year we hear about someone being injured or dying up here while cutting trees after a storm. Sometimes they get hit with a falling or spring loaded limb. Sometimes the tree falls in the wrong direction. Sometimes their child is playing in the stump hole when the stump springs upright Watch your step as there are probably soft spots and holes created by fallen trees and limbs and there will be trip hazzards everywhere. These are all things that have happened on my watch, either directly or close by (some while on hurricane duty in Florida!). We all like to take risks. Heck, we fly homemade seaplanes! But swinging a chainsaw and cutting wood all day is a different kind of risk that we don't do that often.
Watch out for each other. Don't be bashful about reminding someone about safe work and don't be offended when reminded. Please take this in the spirit of caring that you all have fun doing something really good and that nothing tragic happens from carrying out a good deed.

Is there a designated frequency to use on approach to the lake for warnings on debris or other local flyers?

Dan Nickens - Feb 09,2007 Viewers | Reply
The local 'Gator' frequency is 123.375, Ken. It is not likely to be monitored by Roy, but if you fly over, I'll give you a call from the ground.

    Dan,
Do we need to bring additional chain saws? What time are you meeting?

Dan Nickens - Feb 09,2007 Viewers | Reply
There should be plenty of chainsaws, Bill. I'm arriving at around 0930. If Ann reminds me I'll bring a handheld radio. Otherwise I'll just drop the chainsaw and run over to call anyone who flies overhead. Note to self: don't drop chainsaw on foot.

Other than some aching muscles, most survived the weekend workfest with little damage. Early morning fog prevented most from flying in. Darrell and Linda provided international aid when they showed up with their two friends from Canada. Jon and Jane brought a cooler full of liquid refreshment. Bob T. brought his big honking truck to pull down trees. Only Bill Furr was able to aviate to the party.

The biggest injury was to my pride: never bring an impotent chainsaw to a tree chopping party. All I could do is burn through some baby branches with a dull blade. The only bright spot was the double back somersault I performed for the crowd after being tripped by some vengeful branches.

Lots of debris was cleared and Roy and Cindy thank everyone that helped!
Dan, Thanks for the update. Bill Whidden and I splashed in on Sunday to check in and the magnitude of the disaster is hard to understand until you see it. Roy said that they will be working at it for many weeks to come.

'Have chainsaw will fly in'
