The following appeared in the Sunday Orlando Sentinel’s “Ticked Off” column (since the newspaper didn’t see fit to edit it, I won’t either):

“To the fool in a seaplane on Lake Dora: It’s a plane, not a boat, when you run across the water it’s three times as loud. You are disturbing everybody within a two-mile radius. You are also buzzing boats when you take off. Obviously, the boaters are trying to sit there quietly and enjoy some peace and quite. Flying over them while dripping water on them from your seaplane isn’t very bright.”

It was submitted anonymously. That was “bright.” I figure this boat was just floating out there without an engine. Many of his fellow boaters have engines that will make any SeaRey seem silent in comparison.

The sad fact is the boaters are much bigger constituency than seaplaners. And the home owners along the lake are big fat taxpayers. Who wins this battle? Perhaps a temporary, strategic retreat (or “redeployment”) from Lake Dora is in order. Better yet, how about a preemptive strike at the city counsel by concerned Mt. Dorans with SeaReys?

When I got my SES at Jack Brown's seaplane school, my instructor made a point that if the lake was occupied or residences on the shore line, we would depart after 3 approaches. I thought it was a good policy. You can't make everyone happy. I once was flying northbound up the Sacramento river and past on the West side of two guys in a fishing boat. The guy closest to me waved and smiled. Ten minutes later I turned southbound and past the same guys on their eastern side and the guy on that side of the boat gave me the bird, go figure? So I turned 180 degrees again and with the sun at my back, went in with all guns blazing! ( Okay, that part didn't happen).

    Dan,

How big is this lake ?? If it is a mile in dia. or less, maybe a system like I've seen in Michigan ............ mark out a N / S and E / W lane just like the water-skiing people do. Most of the boaters stay out of these lanes. Gal. bleach bottles work fine.

It's a large lake by Florida standards. The problem is probably that it is adjacent to X61 and is heavily used by Seareys. There are two or three based on the lake and at least 10 within five miles. We need to be good neighbors to the rest of the folks on the lake. I know most of us try but a reminder may be in order.

Recently there has been a yellow floatplane landing etc on the lake in front of my house midway on the north side of the lake and he has been quite loud, maybe it is him that drew the fire. This almost sounds like a 'boater' with the dripping water comment. Darrell and I both live on the lake and have not flown much here on the lake as of late and only an occasional visit by Kerry or Paige and others. You are right Dan, the noise from the boats is far louder than a Rotax so i suspect the problem was with the Yellow float plane.
