From the Panama City News Herald:

“Smith had been flying for about 24 years, said his son, Todd Smith, president of the family-owned used car dealership. “He’d fly everywhere he went if he could,” his son said. “All you had to say is, ‘Let’s go,’ and he’d be ready.” He kept the plane in Dothan and flew it here while he was on vacation, and he likely was just taking it out for a pleasure flight when he crashed, his son said. “He just enjoyed getting out and flying,” Todd Smith said. “It was just for the sheer enjoyment of being up in the air. “He enjoyed life to its fullest.” The Smiths were regular vacationers in Mexico Beach, where they stayed for at least one week every year. “They’d been going down there for years and years,” Smith said of his parents. Smith said that the morning his father died, a little boy he’d met recently was waiting on the beach for him, hoping to get a ride in the plane.”

That’s so Dan Smith. You could just see it in his smile.
I'm sorry to here this. I met him and his wife and the last fly in. Is there any information on the arrangements? Where to send flowers, etc?

This was in the Panama City newspaper, Wade: Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday in Dothan at Byrd Funeral Home. Funeral services will be the next morning at 10 a.m.

How about sending flowers from his 'Seaplane Wingmates'? Ann has volunteered to send a funeral arrangement on behalf of the group.

Russ pointed out to me that the family is requesting that donations be made to charities in Dan's name rather than flowers. That makes sense, so I'm not ordering any flowers. There is a link to Dan's obiturary and a place to sign it by posting a message. I'm guessing that will be appreciated as much as anything.

Bruce & I are very sad to hear about this. We met Dan at Garner's Splashin's also. He always had a huge smile on his face. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
Bruce & Judy
