Hi Gang:

Most of you are aware that I have another passion aside from my A-24 amphibian, that being my Questair Venture. Below, I have posted two URLS to some amazing in-cockpit video footage posted on You Tube by Bruce Patton. This footage provides the viewer with a competitor's view of the final Super Gold race at this year's Reno, as seen from good friend Mike Dacey's Venture .

Mike built his Venture himself and unlike most of his competitors, races without any sponsorship. Over the years, he has experienced more than his share of difficulties in his Reno racing activities, but this year, he really pulled off a 'Horatio Alger'. Mike finished third. Only the two 'purpose-built' NXTs were faster. Mike averaged 351 mph around the course (ie., while banked at 85 degrees and pulling multiple 'Gs' most of the time). If you watch closely, you will see Mike overhaul and pass a Lancair Legacy (on the last lap, no less).

Making Reno even sweeter for Venture fliers was the fact that Tony Crawford competed in his FIXED GEAR Venture and finished third in the Silver final, averaging 279 mph around the course (Tony finished ahead of several Glassairs, Legacies SX-300s and even a Lancair 4).

Both guys flew their Ventures to the event and then flew them back home after the racing was finished (and Tony lives on Florida). Neither experienced any problems during the races nor enroute to and from the races. I am proud of the fact that both Ventures sported some of my 'mods'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0g7NOlr18Y

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poXvouR2Gf0

Enjoy!

Best,
Larry Woods

Okay, Larry, that does look like fun. How about next year we enter in the light sport amphibian turtle cross amble?

Cool! There's one point on the last lap where he appears to roll beyond 90 degrees. Maybe that gave him the speed to pass the Legacy. I'd like to see those videos in hi-res.

Ah, but Dan has a point about the turtle cross amble.

Last spring I wrote to the guys who sponsor that race to Oshkosh--whatever it's called--requesting that they open a category for two-place home-built amphibians. Still waiting for their reply.

    Hi Dan:

Running a Venture at its normal cruise speed of 275 mph up at 10,000 to 15,000 feet is fun. I have a different term for running it in close proximity to 'Mother Earth' and several other competitors at 350 mph. (g)
(Must be the encroachments of the aging process as I have always been fairly competitive by nature).

That said, I sure have a great deal of respect and admiration for both Mike and Tony. Thye have shown the world what this remarkable aircraft can do.

Best,
Larry

    Hi Don:

I have several pals who compete in the race from Dayton to Oshkosh. To a man they all say it is a ball. And interestingly enough, there have been amphibians entered. (g)

Best,
Larry

Thanks for posting, Larry. That is FUN to watch. I can't imagine what it would be like to be in the cockpit.
