Do any of you use Adobe Photoshop? If so, how do you resize a picture to a smaller file size so it can be uploaded to a site that only accepts 300 and smaller?
This isn't exactly about seaplanes but it is about cutting an oak tree that is hanging over my hanger.

I use Photoshop for lots of things, but I've never used it to cut down an oak tree. It seems that it would take some time to saw through the tree bark with just the Adobe CD.

To resize a photo (without using scissors):
Open a new file, specify the size and resolution you require
Copy the contents of the original into the new file, either drag it to the new window or cut and paste it there
Size the photo in the new window, just grab a corner and manipulate it to fit like you want it, (To preserve aspect ratio, hold Shift while resizing)
Select Layer - Flatten Image, this will condense all layers of the file
Select File - Save As, give it a new name and choose which type of file you want to save it as, most are .jpg
Good grief....that sounds harder than continuing to wear through this 48' oak with the CD!. Thank you, sir. I'll print this out, have a couple of beers and try it.

    Dennis,

This is easy. Download the freeware program IRFANVIEW (find it with any search engine) I use this as my primary JPG viewer. It is free for unlimited use.

Open the picture you want to downsize in IRFANVIEW. From the top menus, select 'Image' and then 'Resize/Resample...' You then have many options for downsizing. For 300K, I would suggest 1024 x 768. Then you need to do 'File' and 'Save As' to save the downsized picture.

I bet you can start from scratch and have IRFANVIEW downloaded and your picture downsized in less than 5 minutes. Start your stopwatch now and let me know how it goes.

Dennis, maybe a simpler, cruder method will work for you. Get the photo in Photoshop, then in the Image menu select Resize, and click on Image Size. In the window that appears, change pixels to percent for Width and Height. Then change either width or height 100 to some percentage of 100--50, say. The other dimension will change automatically. When you click on OK, the photo will change size, and finally in the File menu you can do Save As... to save it with a new name so that it doesn't over-write the original photo. (Be sure NOT to use just plain Save!)

The new, smaller photo will have a smaller file size. It will also have smaller dimensions and lower resolution--but maybe it will be okay for your purpose.

Even easier than that, get a Mac. iPhoto will export a copy in any size or shape. So simple. But you asked for a way to do it in Photoshop, not a way to simplify your life.

If it were me, use Photoshop for something like this and by doing this, you will learn how to use the software to manipulate the images. Photoshop is an amazingly powerful program, but it's easy to learn if you do it a little at a time.

Eventually you can do something like this, all of these came from video clips from my wakeboard show. I just stopped the action and then lined them up and blended the backgrounds. I made high resolution copies for print work and low resolution copies for website stuff. All of this was done in Photoshop.

Without fear of hijacking this thread, I really love seeing people fall down. I'm sorry, they just crack me up. Attachments:

Thanks, everyone, for your help. Tony G helped me realize I didn't have Photoshop, just the free version of Photoshop Album Starter. I never found the 'resize' feature. I used MS Picture Manager which worked.
Of course, my pictures of a red oak tree weren't quite as exciting as these by Steve D.
