    Hi Gang:<br /><br />Driving south from Canada in January is always a delightful trip..... especially as one transitions from parka, long johns and full blast car heater to tee shirt, shorts and rolled down windows. (g)<br /><br />With the enroute business part of the trip behind me, I crossed into Florida and commenced hunting down the elusive Dan Nickens (no fault of Dan as I had not specified the time of my arrival). Found his digs, but no one around, so scouted the local lake front and finally located Dan at his hangar. Wow, what a neat set-up..... gorgeous hangar, nearby ramp to the water and even an adjacent orange grove sporting well-ripened fruit. A super day followed which included some great flying with Dan as well as wonderful meals with Dan, Daryl, Kerry, etc. <br /><br />Being a Canuck, and having long since developed a healthy respect for this planet's sea-life, before we lifted off, I casually asked Dan if there were any alligators in the local neighbourhood. Dan smiled and allowed that yes there were, and yes, we might even see a few during our flight. HA! Following the shoreline of the local lakes we counted many DOZENS of them! And even from a hundred feet or more, they sure look like mighty mean critters to this northerner. Love the Florida weather, but I sure wouldn't want to dispute a shoreline with even the smaller versions. (g)<br /><br />All-in-all, it was more than a great pleasure to spend time with Dan and I was truly sorry to have to leave, but the first annual winter gathering of 'the Venture gang' awaited me at North Palm Beach airport (F45). This too was a fabulous event, highlighted by the setting of two speed records by one of our group, Dave Corey. Dave routinely flies his Venture from his home base in Bennington VT to California, so this past fall, David began to get organized for an attempt on both coast-to-coast speed records. With a business conference scheduled in San Diego for the week preceding our get-together, Dave headed westbound. He made one stop enroute and landed in San Diego less than 9 hours later, INCLUDING his time on the ground for his single fuel stop! One record down, one to go.<br /><br />Two days later (a week ago Friday), Dave left San Diego at 7:34 am Eastern time and quickly climbed to 25,000 feet, an altitude that he routinely flies on most of his trips. Some 7 hours and forty minutes later, he crossed the West Palm Beach airport VOR, thus shattering the west-to-east, coast-to-coast record. Two records in a single week!<br /><br />Interesting facts with respect to Dave's east bound trip included:<br />- Dave departed San Diego with 80 gallons in his wing tanks (i.e., no ferry tanks) and landed with 18 gallons still on board. The distance covered exceeds 1900 nautical miles. This works out to over 30 nautical miles per gallon and a fuel flow of under 8 gallons per hour. I leave it to each of you to calulate his average speed. (g)<br /><br />- Dave's Venture is in all respects completely standard. His IO550-G engine does NOT employ turbo chargers (standard Ventures have set records for time-to-climb, speed and also altitude, all without the use of turbos).<br /><br />- I don't know of any airline that could transport its customers over that distance in a similar time......or for that little cost. (g)<br /><br />- Of course, Dave used oxygen for the trip. He also had the foresight to toss a couple of sandwiches aboard before leaving. When I asked him if there had been any difficulties enroute he replied, 'Nope, I just sat there and enjoyed the scenery. My backside did get a bit numb from sitting in the same seat, but no more so than in an airliner'. <br /><br />Quite a 'Dash' for sure and I am very proud of Dave's accomplishment. Given the Venture's fine results at Reno in September, (351 mph average speed around the course in Mike Dacey's turboed Venture and 280 mph average for Tony Crawford in his fixed gear, non-turboed Venture), the 'egg' is gaining well-deserved respect.<br /><br />Best,<br />Larry <br /><br />
