I'm having trouble when I click on the Files area. When I click on it the Shuttle Launch video seems to be loading, and it never stops. I cannot click on the Reply to send a message, so I'm in kind of like a 'Limbo' in that section. I did download my video and now it seems I can't turn it off from trying to load up. So I'm sending the continuation of talking about Quicktime Pro 7 in the News section.

Wow Steve!! I thought for sure you might say something negative about the Quicktime Pro 7. Thanks for all your good words on it. I did try exporting the video yesterday with a copy of the launch video; however I found that I don't have to use a copy because it makes it own copy, and the original one is not ruined.

I did it on two videos, one on the 'Indeo' and one on the 'Cinepak'. I made sure the sound matched what I put in the sound area, but I found that I lost some of the quality from even the copy. I did not try this yet with the original video. I guess that will be the downfall, losing some of the quality of the original video, no matter what program you use???

I'll be trying different clarities like Medium and going to Best, that would be I think for the quality of the picture?

Steve, you are right about being able to edit videos. We always had Quicktime Player, and that download was of course free. But now with this program I will be able to edit things. Before I could not do anything except look at the video!! That's how far free stuff will get you, there's always a 'catch.'

As far as making the video smaller, I saw there was something on Quicktime that you download for free to be able to do this. I'm thinking it cannot be done with the Quicktime Pro 7 by itself???

Thanks Tony, I'm glad you liked the video. That was the worse video that I have taken to date, I will not try to walk and take a video again!! We're here 20 years and we have seen and heard many many shuttles and rockets. I have posted some of the pictures that I took of both the launches and the rockets. Our windows shake so much because of all the rattling and shaking when they take off! We are about 10 minutes from The Kennedy Space Center. The sonic booms when the Shuttles land, are extremely loud, even though you know they will be sounding.....it still gets your attention!!

    Judy,

Couple of quick questions before I give an editing lesson. Give me some details:
What video camera do you shoot with?
Do you import the footage into your computer through the Firewire?
What computer do you work on?
How big is the harddrive and how much room can you make available for video stuff?

Well, that's a lot of technical questions.I use a small Olylmpus camera that takes pictures and you can take videos with it. It's an Olympus Stylus 720 SW.

I'm not sure about this question. I put the small XD picture card from the
camera, into our COMPAQ computer, there is a slot to place it.
It says on the COMPAQ that it is a 120GB, I'm not sure if Bruce put in a larger
or different one. On the computer it also says the MEMORY is 512MB.

What does all of this have to do with simply changing from the .mov to the .avi? My camera was not cheap, but it does not have all the features of a professional type camera. The video capability is probably just adequete, but all I want to do is change it to avi and hopefully have it come on if I click on it in this site. So far I cannot click on the Quicktime where I have the Launch video, I had to download it, and now it is all messed up if I even click on the Files site. I'd hate to lose the quality of the original video, just to be able to do that. This is a brand new computer also.

Judy

Judy, just download RadVideo and use it to convert from.MOV to .AVI (or other formats). It does a lot more than you need, but it's fairly easy to make it do that much. It's shareware--meaning that you can contribute to the developer, but you get to try it for free. Download it here: http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=vir
tualdub&filename=VirtualDub-1.7.7.zip&use_mirror=internap

Don't worry when you see it referred to by one or two other names. Those are modules within it. RadVideo comes to you as a program (an .exe file). Just double-click on the filename after it's saved on your computer, and it will install itself. Then you can run it.

1. It will start up calling itself RAD Video Tools and will look like a file requester dialog window.

2. In that window, find the .MOV file you want to convert and SINGLE-click on it. (Double-clicking will play it in Quicktime.)

3. Click on the 'Convert a file' button at the bottom of the window. If you see a dialog about a sequence of files, click NO the first time, so that RealVideo won't concatenate a whole lot of videos into one.

4. Next you'll see the main Bink Converter window. In the upper left corner is the suggested output filename, with '.avi' at the end. You can change the name if you wish. And you can 'Browse' to tell Bink where to save it. You can also change the output type to a different video file format if you wish. 'Automatic overwrite' will replace a previously-saved file with a new one with the same name. I'd leave it unchecked unless you're sure.

5. Click on the 'Convert' button at the far right. That should open two new windows. The second , 'Video Compression,' lets you choose from the compression 'codecs' that are on your computer. I'd start with 'Microsoft Windows Media Video'. The 'Configure' button lets you change various compression parameters. You don't have to do that, but to make a more compressed video file, you can change the 'Quality level' from 80 to some lower number.

6. Click on 'OK' in the Video Compression window, and the conversion will begin automatically. (This is where you might wish you had changed the output filename earlier if the 'Automatic overwrite' box was checked.)

That's it. You're done.

If you want the file compressed further, try Microsoft Movie Maker, which should be in Start / Accessories / ,

Thanks Don, this doesn't look very easy, but I'm sure when I'm going though it, it will make sense. So are you saying I made a mistake buying the Quicktime Pro 7?? I think having the ability to edit with that program will turn out to be a good thing......I hope, it was $29.95! I'll make a copy of what you said to do, and I'll try doing that. I was wondering if the fact that I don't have an exclusive video only camera with all the extra features on it, compared to my Olympus, made the copies that I made a little worse in the avi format. I made these 2 videos with a copy of the original. The copy was a tad worse then the original. I'll eventually try changing the original to avi with the Quicktime Pro 7, and see if it's any better. Thanks....................Judy

Don, I just re-read the first line of your message. What do you mean ' you get to contribute to the developer????' Do you mean money?? Judy

Get to, Judy, not have to. With shareware you get to try it for free and if you use it regularly, then you can pay the shareware fee. But downloading and trying is free. And it's easier to do than my instructions probably make it seem. Just do it by the numbers, and let me know if you have any problems.

Judy, sorry it took so long, I had to shoot another Searey video with Phil this morning. Anyway, here's what I found out with my experiments.

I took your movie into my QT program. It was 55 Meg, that's a little big. I chose the command File-Export For Web and it gave me three choices to click on. I chose all three and it exported your movie three different ways. Stay with me, you are doing good!

One of the choices for exporting is called Desktop. That made an MPEG-4 file, (638x480) pretty big frame size, and only 24.5 Meg, half the size. When you export, you do not affect the original. Then you just name it and post it and then we can all enjoy it with you. Try Export For Web and tell me how it goes. One step at a time.

I'll post the files here. There was also a little one made for cell phones. Thought it was cute, 1.6 Meg.

Steve D
Attachments:

Steve, I clicked on Launch Desktop, and the video never came one. It supposedly downloaded from the site, but nothing!! I clicked on the Launch-cell, and it came on fairly soon, but I did not like how small the picture was, although it looked like the quality was good. I re-read your message and it said it was for cell phones, now I see why it was so small. I could not see anything in the Launch Desktop. Something happened since I downloaded the video in the Files section. I cannot see the video and it hangs me up to do anything in that section, like send a reply and so on. I don't know if anyone else is having that problem. I probably clicked on both items too many times, and now the video is truely messed up.......for me.

How did you get to the Desktop section? Is that in the Quicktime Pro 7 also?? I know I'll eventually figure out how to do this, and how to make the video smaller.....I just don't want to spend all day, or the rest of my life, trying to do this!!

Two weeks ago on Sunday we splashed down on Pointset Lake in our area, we went by some alligators going into the water from a small island, and then we took off. I'm thinking of putting that on, but I want to probably shorten it. I'm not sure I like the program Don mentioned, I don't like the idea of trying it, but not being able to keep it without sharing or paying anything more then I already paid for. I suppose I could just try it for this new video. Is there a way to shorten a video with just the Quicktime Pro 7 without getting into any new programs???
Judy
