Well......I got my Anywhere Map 2 days ago. I was so excited. It has lots of cool features. I especially like the 'Find Nearest' and then 'AWOS' and you get a list of the 20 nearest AWOS reporting stations with bearing, distance, and frequency. Now that is slick - and something that I would use.

Then I found THE PROBLEM. Now I am totally discouraged and feel that I will need to send it back. The Problem is the absolutely terrible water / land boundary database. My lake looks like a polygon and the data base does not even include rivers. The water / land database is far worse than my Lowrance Airmap I purchased in 1996. That makes this thing pretty useless for Seaplanes.

To make matters worse, the Tomtom database resident in this thing has an excellent land / water database. But the Tomtom database only knows how to get there via road. Pretty useless for flying.

I have looked for a solution. I thought I would be able to fix it when I found there was a Water - US - Eastern database to download from their web site, but it did not change anything as far as I could tell. Their online technical help said there was nothing that could be done. They have a 'Tell the Boss' link which is supposed to send a message to the president of the company for folks who feel they are getting the run around or are frustrated. The response from that was an 'Autoreply' from someone else saying that they did not check email very often and suggested I contact sales.

Dan, Ken, what do you think about the water / land database and have you found a way to fix it?

I have 30 days to return it so I think I will go ahead and bring it to Sun N Fun and take it by their booth and express my frustration and see if they have a solution. I'll have a few days after I return to send it back within the 30 day window if a solution can not be found.

Reckon Garmin will be running any show specials??

Garmin does not sell any units and has a fixed price at Sun n Fun BUT you
can deal with the vendors on the
add on stuff. The 496 has a lot of the ponds around MA named. Start
looking on line and talk to some of the
dealers you may be able to make a deal then pick up at Sun n Fun. I love
my 496 and it has weather.
I have it with me you will be welcome to play with it.

I'd check with the Garmin dealers at the show, Jeff. Add a USGS topographic database to a 196/295/296/396/496 and you'll have all the detail any cartographer could want (caution: make sure you get a large memory stick as even the (older) Garmins can get cranky at the edges of the maps).

Jeff, I'm very sorry you are disappointed with it. You are correct that it does not show detail on water. I have used it to know where I am relative to airports and airspace (as I'm under class B) as opposed to following a river. You can place a waypoint on any GPS location and that's how I marked my lake. BTW, Garmin just announced a new product, the 495. It has all the features of the 496 except no weather capability and the road map is an add on. About $1500. I think I'll stick with my anywhere map for now.

I just read about the 495. It sounds to me like the 296. I wonder what the difference is. Maybe just a faster processor?

    296 - XM not available
396 slightly better resolution - XM weather available.
496 faster processor and the 'taxi safe' or some such airport maps are included.
For me, I would save the few bucks and go with the 396, so I would have the option of XM weather. Of course, I havent seen how significant the difference of the faster processing on the 496 is.

Get a Blackberry (or equivalent model) and use the internet capability to access any weather station you want. Works great in the air... including weather radar. Plus you can use it as a phone, too! ;-)

I use Pilot My-Cast on my cellphone. It works fine wherever there's digital coverage and you can even file a flight plan with it (if you're so inclined).
