Ahem. Yesterday I decided that a bowline is insufficient for mooring a seaplane.
What happened is that I tied a line to the bow-eye and tied the other end of the line to a stake on Tommy Crump's beach on the lower James River, using a bowline at each end.
The stake end held just fine. The seaplane end, on the other hand, actually came untied. After an hour, it was still looped through the boweye and around itself, but the bitter (free) end had slipped out of the "hole" in the standing end and was merely dangling in the water.
Yikes!
That's never happened to me before, but once is more than enough. So I've decided to start tying the bitter end around the bowline loop, as shown at the end of this sequence:
http://www.animatedknots.com/bowlineonehand/index.php?LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com
Also, several knot websites recommend that the bitter end should be at least 12 times as long as the diameter of the line. I don't think I left anywhere near that much yesterday. The line was 3/8" in diameter, so that would require the bitter end to be at least 36/8", or 5"
Fortunately, the wind was very light and the tide, slack. Otherwise, I would have been splashing and dashing after the SeaRey.

That's a good site, too, Charlie. And he leaves enough of the bitter end hanging out.
