I've been treated for hypertension for about 6 years now. I developed type II diabetes about 5 years ago. I've had to present a 'normal' resting EKG and 3 blood pressure readings to my AME for the hypertension and a statement from my regular doctor that my glucose was in control by diet and exercise, or oral medication, or both. That's fairly easy.

This time, I went to my regular doc 3 months before my class 3 was due to expire and my EKG wasn't normal. I was referred by a senior AME to another senior AME who's also a cardiologist for a nuclear stress test. The results of the exam were that my glucose was too high and my stress test results were OK, but not great. He's deferring my approval to Atlanta, who will likely defer to OKC. The Atlanta docs will decide that, but I ain't real hopeful.

Maybe you don't have the same combination of problems I do, but as far as the glucose is concerned, I should've given it another month, because it takes about 3 months for your hemoglobin a1c test to show an appreciable change.

Because I've been turned down for a medical, I need to do whatever it takes to get it back, or I won't qualify for even LSA privileges. I'm sure I'll get it back, but it may be a lengthy and expensive process.

Y'all stay healthy out there!
I'm so sorry to read this Jim. I lost my licence for two years due to DVT /Pulmonery Embolism and it took two years of fighting to get it back. Hope your time frame is much less. Good luck

Best of luck Jim with retrieving your Medical and even more best wishes to avoid getting stressed with the
process. Dealing with the FAA should be adopted to be the stress test to qualify for the Medical! Hang in there!
Bad cess, Jim! But don't give up hope. The FAA is a lot more flexible now than it was just a few years ago.

One thing I learned the hard way while getting my own medical back after open-heart surgery is always to fax them the paperwork. Never send it by mail--because it will go first to a private security company to be screened for anthrax and other bad stuff, and won't reach the FAA for several weeks.

To get the fax number, telephone the Oklahoma City office. That number is on their website somewhere.

Here are the numbers that worked for me: Voice: 800-350-5286 FAX: 405-954-4300

All communications from the FAA are form letters written by lawyers, so they have a horribly chilling effect on pilots. Don't let the tone bother you, just look for the facts instead.

And use the telephone whenever you possibly can, even if their letters say to mail stuff to them. Calm down first, and then pick up the phone. Everyone I talked with there was helpful.

Great advice Don. Would have helped me 6 years ago.I did as told and suffered for it.Six years ago had Prostate cancer. Surgically removed and I am satisfied with it, twice a year PSA tests always un-measurable. Homeland security, not the FAA dictated that anyone with a life-threatening Problem should have no medical or a provisional medical. Rational being someone that has nothing to lose could fly into the Sears building! No thought given to the fact that the nothing to lose guy, would care if he legally or illegally flew in to said building. I now get a 1 year medical, always did anyway. Instead of the doctor handing it to me, he mails it to OKE city, along with PSA results and letter from my doctor, stating 'see no reason Lee cannot' Oke city then sends me my certificate. Sounds fair enough BUT for six years now, Oke city has taken 8 months to mail me a certificate that is good for 4 more months. I spend 6 months in Chicago and six months in Florida. Bonanza is in Chgo I am usually in Fla for the 4 months I am legal, and When I get back to Chgo Aircraft is at, or out of annual insurance is Ground-only and I am out of med! Six years is a long time. I have a bonanza for sale, I actually have a med in my pocket right now, but only for two more weeks. I hope to be flying my Searey by November, Am debating getting one more Med, to fly the aircraft out of quaranteen and to get water rated, which I am not. do not know if I will get one more med or not, will not get two! I will fly LSA for the rest of my life, starting now if I do not neeed a med to get Searey out of it's teething problems, and a water rating.

Lee, if you're going to keep on getting medicals (on the FAA's six-month-lag schedule), maybe it would be smart to have the exam six or eight months early. Then you'd still have a valid medical while the bureaucrats were fiddling around with the new one. If they don't write and tell you that a medical certification has been revoked outright, you're still legal to fly on it until it expires.

doesn't work that way,I can never let it get to where the doc has not seen me in more than 24 months. And If I wait a couple months to see the Doc, (tried that to stagger the time to fit the annuals they penalize an already too short year.I am a comm pilot with yearly meds, I now take third class two yr. meds If I am late or early my 12 months are then 10 months or whatever. This has been happening for six years and to my surprise they have issued me permission to get still a 1 yr med, but to walk out of the doctors office with it. this is for only the next six years. I have never failed a med, thus can fly under LSA rules. see no reason other than Searey start-up and the fact that I am not yet water rated to get another Med. Hopefully fly Searey till I die or another Lsa. Even with the premise of getting the easiest Med I have had in six years, do not know if I desire one. Rules say never havng failed a med. A guy from the cancer clinic can fly LSA on his drivers license, he has never failed a Med simply because he has never taken one! My med is out again in two weeks, do not need another until November. If I can do as I need without, I probably will. I have never failed, have a current for two weeks in my pocket. Rules say never have failed a med, but I am sure you all know that you can fail, then re-aquire at least a third class, you may then fly LSA and never put yourself in that position again. I think I would like to quit a winner, do not care a lot if I fly heavier than LSA.

    Lee,
I don't think you need your med for your Searey startup. As long as the plane fits the sport pilot rules, you can fly it without a med. As for water flying, you would need an endorsement not a full on seaplane rating. The guys at the Aventura factory get this done for people all the time. Maybe the Searey guys do the same?

    Matt:
Believe you are correct about the med, not sure about the water rating, have heard of an SP-4 (or similar) rating believe it to be an LSA type water rating. If an endorsement is enough I would be happy with that. I do not wish to short, or compromise training, take all of that available, but do not desire a rating that would let me fly a Seabee. Legally fly 1430# and get it wet would be fine. Have a friend in the San Fran FSDO who likes answering these type questions, and will be 3 or 4 days at Oshkosh Where I am sure a fed or two will be available

Don: Was a time when getting back a med after any Procedure with the word 'heart' in it belonged in Ripleys. Late sixties a pilot who flew out of the hangar I did, lost his med to open heart surgery. BUT he was a cardiologist and a fighter. We were told That it had never been reversed. The FBO, and I as chief flight instructor, flew with him and a jillion wires attached to him in high 'G' Zero 'G' unusual attitude, stalls etc. 2 years of paperwork, affidavits, and court appearances he got re-instated. we were told at the time he was the first ever. As I remember it he had restrictions, some of which went away after two years. Some of which required a doctors letter (I am doing that myself) and some for awhile recurrent flights with myself or the FBO

    Let's drink to him!

Lee Pfingston - Jul 18,2008 Viewers | Reply
He was a great guy! He was sixty, I was twenty something, we would both be wired up with battery powered EKG which I thought was cutting edge 40 yrs ago, we then went flying and he would staple mine to his.

Thanks for the numbers, Don... I don't intend to give up on the medical and I sure as heck hope it doesn't end up like Lee's situation.

Currently, I'm dealing with incompetence at the local level. The nurse for the cardiologist/AME I saw last week hasn't returned my calls. I'm unsure if they ordered a copy of my cath results and even if those are recent enough to be acceptable to the FAA. The AME only works Tue - Thur, so I'll call him first thing Tues.

My bigger problem was the glucose. I also have to wait for guidance from the ATL docs to see what they need. I'm sure I'll get it back under control and get back to just diet & exercise instead of the oral meds. My personal doc is working closely with me and his letter explaining lack of symptoms will help a lot.

JIm, those numbers worked three years ago, but before faxing anything it would be good to phone and verify the fax number. Who knows--with all the interest in reforming the system, they might have two fax machines by now.

Good advice, Don. Mebbe they'll even do it through email. At this point, it's still in my local AME's court, but he said it would go to ATL first, before OKC. I'm sure I'll end up dealing with them in the end, though.

Cheers to Lee's cardiologist friend, but I'll have to pass on the drink. I'm on the wagon for a bit to give my innards a rest. Like my Cockney friend Neil said the other day, 'Quit drinkin' or quit flyin'... Simple, innit?'

    Lee,
Sorry for your troubles. In case nobody had mentioned it, the EAA has a group of volunteer AME's with all kinds of expertice. One of them may be able to give you some tips. Try the office after Oshkosh. I was a volunteer, but my expertice is is Plastic Surgery and ENT some I am useless to you. Good luck.
