Hi Gang:

In earlier commentary, I have noted that, from my perspective, the A-24 was not quite as good as some other amphibians in crosswind landings on ashphalt runways. Over the past several weeks, I have addressed this issue and the results of this effort might be of interest to other amphibious drivers. Following assiduous combing of the literature and discussions with landing gear experts, I machined up a series of aluminum 'wedges', which could be inserted between the main landing gear legs and the main landing gear spindle assemblies. In essence, these 'wedges' allowed me to experiment with a variety of 'toe-in - toe out' adjustments as well as camber angles, with respect to the main landing gear wheels. Through the use of some fairly simple laser equipment, I was able to very accurately set both the toe-in as well as the camber angles

The results of this effort have provided some useful (to me) knowledge as well as significant performance benefits.

- To begin with, the best results by far were achieved with almost negligible camber and totally neutral toe-in. This setting resulted in significantly improved cross wind control, as well as MUCH better tire wear characteristics.
- I learned that consequential toe-in appears to accentuate the propensity for the A-24 to want to ground loop.

The proof is always to be found in actual performance. With the newly-modified (neutral) main landing gear, I have tackled greater cross winds and found the aircraft to be much better behaved in strong crosswinds. I am now comfortable that its cross wind performance compares favorably with other amphibians.

Best,
Larry

Larry, do you have any pictures and details of your 'fairly simple laser equipment' setup?

That's the configuration that works best on most taildraggers, Larry (although there's always argument about it).

    Hi Bard:

I will try to get a quick photo for you and post it.

Hi Don:

I agree.... on both counts. (g)

Best,
Larry
