So I've been in Kansas (McConnell AFB) for this week at a school for the KC-135 tanker systems. It is a Boeing 707 used for in-flight refueling of military fighters, bombers etc.<br />An interesting class and I sweet talked my way into the full motion simulator for an hour - after hours with several of the enlisted systems instructors. (so I could validate what they had taught me more effectively and they could have airborn application experience) We shared flying duties and all of us learned.<br /><br />After getting beaten up with all kinds of malfunctions, multiple engine failures, hydrolic failures, etc, I was worn out but I bet them an extra 1/2 hour of time I could barrel roll the plane without crashing. I oversped but what a hoot! Then they really poured on the malfunctions! It was loads of fun but I was worn out and a bit airsick when I was done. Landed/crashed at Tampa and the Azores a bunch of times and even overflew my lake. <br />BTW, it can be flown with zero hydrolics!

Having been on the receiving end of a KC-135, I can tell you it's a beautiful sight to see when you're low on fuel and there's no land in sight... even on radar. But... I didn't see it do a barrel roll.

Hey Ken...I got my B707 check out in 1963 while flying for Aer Lingus (aka..Irish Intl.)<br />No simulator so all the training was done in Shannon. The most exciting manoeuver was a jammed stab approach,,,and landing...using the speed brakes as pitch control.<br />The infamous ' Dutch Roll ' was also a hoot.<br />Eight hours of in-flt with a Boeing instructor....Max Schwin.Great memories !!

It's a bit of a mental shift to go from 'new' C-17s to 50 year old planes. However, we've still got about 500 of these puppies flying and I don't see a replacement getting to line units for 10 years minimum. Please let me be retired by then! Anyway, we've upgraded the engines twice and changed the avionics to mostly glass. It is reliable if not glamourus. The older I get, the more I value that!

Keep on upgrading them. At least they were made in America. The replacement just about became an AirBus320 airframe.<br /><br />I sometimes miss the days being at the controls of our TPS-43 Radar looking up at all you guys having fun.
