The 10th Annual Garner's Landing SeaRey Gathering is Sunday, April 19th.

So it's time to get serious about rounding up Mid-Atlantic SeaReys and watching the weather.

Jeff Arnold and Bill Fosdick both say they're flying their SeaReys, and we've talked about flying together. Euclid Benoit might be able to come from Ontario. And I know there must be others--the NC guys, the SC guys, the GA guys, the... Who else?

Here's my own tentative plan:

Fri AM Depart Richmond (KFCI)

Fri PM RON ?

Sat AM Depart ?

Sat PM Arrive Garners' area (1FL0 / KGIF / Lake Agnes, the S-N-F splash-in
site at Fantasy of Flight)

That's way too simple, of course, because of possible bad weather and certain good fun.

BAD WEATHER: This trip is generally up-weather. It's possible to make the 650 nm from Richmond in one day, but only if there's no headwind, and anyway more than 400 or 500 miles in one day is too much like work to suit me unless it's a race. So I'm aiming at two days and am prepared to leave up to a week early if the weather looks really crappy on Friday or Saturday.

RON ?: Sometimes you just have to stop somewhere and find out later what's there. That's some of the fun. Here are two possible routes that look good to me--but I have no pref right now:

ROUTE 1. KGGE Georgetown, SC. Georgetown is on the coast, and there's a SeaRey guy there, John Matthews. I don't know about accommodations, but the AOPA Airport Directory says there's a courtesy car and several motels and restaurants about 4 miles away.

Disadvantage: This route requires flying through the Beaufort MOA, which begins at 100 ft AGL. If it turned out to be radically hot, I'd probably fly above Beaufort Two (100-7000), but going around isn't too much out of the way. Otherwise, I'd just stay low, be watchful, and mind my own business. It's also a few miles farther for anyone coming from, say, Charlotte.

ROUTE B. Dutchman's Creek Marina, Lake Wateree, SC (a bit west of KCDN). This marina has high-test MOGAS and hamburgers. (Taxi up the ramp to the gas pump.) It's also just a few miles from Glenn Folsom's place. Glenn used to be a SeaRey dealer and has been a controversial figure. He offended a number of very nice SeaRey people a while back, but I get along well with him. He has a rental house next door that might be available for a RON. I haven't asked him about that yet this year, but he and his wife Lian (pron 'lynn') were enthusiastic about a stopover last year and seemed disappointed when the weather got in the way. I'll phone him if there's interest in stopping there overnight.

Disadvantage: Route 2 is more inland--reaches the coast at Savannah. The along-the-coast difference is about 90 miles (roughly 210 for Route 1 and 120 for Route B).

Two other good places to stop are KSSI (St. Simons Island, GA) and 09J (Jekyll Island, GA). SSI has courtesy cars and there are restaurants and motels nearby (motels often booked for golf tournaments). 09J is much more laid-back, but no courtesy car and (I think) no fuel.

Here are some approximate distances:

KFCI-KGGE 260
KGGE-KSSI 170
===
430

KFCI-KCDN 240
KCDN-KSSI 200
===
460

KSSI-KGIF 190
===
Grand Total 620/650

Here are a few other potential stops en route:

KFFA, Kill Devil Hills, NC (not on the route, but close enough to consider for anyone coming from the north who hasn't visited The Wright Brothers Memorial yet).

01J, where Rick Oreair now keeps his SeaRey.

X61 (Bob White Field) and nearby (Orlando North? Field), where PA keeps the factory ship now.

Walt Disney World, flying over which will get you a long, long stopover.

So: Who's in? And what about route suggestions, join-up points, etc.?
I'm in. Finished the tail feather gap seals, cleaned and gapped the plugs, oil change sched for next weekend. Aired out the tent and sleeping bag. Gathered up the rest of the camping gear. Almost afraid to weigh all of it. If I get away from work in time and the weather holds for a Thursday launch, I will fly to Jeff Arnold's, RON with a morning two ship departure. Maybe to lake Norman for Jeff to pick up a copilot and to gas up, or for points south for a rendezvous with you somewhere. I'm cool with either route. It would be nice to vist GGE, but then I've never been to Dutchman Creek. We will have a little more of an inland route so CDN to 01J might be player.

Jeff Arnold - Mar 29,2009 Viewers | Reply
As stated, I'm In. Assuming weather not a factor, Bill will come to Claytor Lake Thursday Night. Anyone else coming this way is welcome to RON at Claytor Lake Base. We have lots of room and lots of fuel cans.

N 37° 4.37'
W 80° 36.67'

We will leave Friday AM. As Bill mentioned, possible stop by Charlotte area to pick up Tony G if he decides to ride along. Then...... Head south.

Meat Don at Dutchman Creek / KCDN? Lunch with Glen Folsom?
KGGE?
KSSI?
01J?

Yes to any and / or all of the above. I am OPEN to all possibilities.

I do not have the flexibility to leave early for weather. I am just hoping that weather will cooperate. We Will See.......

Don - How about Matt? Talk him into coming?

Matt Tucciarone - Mar 30,2009 Viewers | Reply
    Jeff,
I have already purchased an airline round trip ticket since I am not flexible on when I get home but I am flexible on the way down. I could blow off that ticket and be a co-pilot with someone. I have already mentioned it to my friend Randy, who has an Air Cam on floats, that lives near Bill. If that works out we will fly that into Garners. It is a very impressive plane on the water but would be a little rough to fly in the back seat all the way to Florida. It has no wind screen in the back.

Jeff Arnold - Mar 30,2009 Viewers | Reply
Hey Matt, that would be great. Is Randy's Air Cam amphib or straight floats? In either case, you guys could come down to Claytor Lake Thursday with Bill.

Isn't the front seat pilot your wind screen? It would be just like riding a motorcycle.

Matt Tucciarone - Mar 30,2009 Viewers | Reply
    Jeff,
The Air Cam has amphib floats. I think they are fiberglass and cost more that my whole plane. I still like my plane but man can that Air Cam handle rough water. Not so good on bumpy grass strips. It has small wheels.

Here's an update on Jeff and Bill. Just flew over the house at 11:10AM. It couldn't be a better flying day up here (20 miles north of CLT on Lake Norman). IWANNAGO!!
Attachments:

I have a mother in law suite that has two double beds plus a spare bedroom and a couch available. Also have 75 gallon gas tank if fuel is needed.

Bill Fosdick - Apr 05,2009 Viewers | Reply
Thanks John. The committee is still out on fuel stops etc. If we don't hit GGE on the way down we always have another chance on the way back. Is your phone number still the same?
Bill

I'm in. We (Tim and I) are planning to leave on Tuesday, or Wednesday, depending on weather, arriving at KFCI the same evening. I was hoping to get to KFFA on way. If we do get to KFCI on Tuesday then we might move on to the coast and catch up with you at Walterboro, SC (RBW or 29SC??). Is this stop to be Friday evening?

Don Maxwell - Apr 02,2009 Viewers | Reply
    Euclid--cool!

FFA is a good day trip from KFCI, but you can also hike about 1.5 or 2 miles to fast food and motels. I'm not sure about taxis, but probably. No services at FFA, but KMQI is only about 6 miles to the south.

About Walterboro, SC: Sorry! That's just a joke between Charlie Pickett and me. It has a nice airport, but it's where we got stuck by weather for three days. Fat Jack's is a family-style greasy spoon that we discovered by accident while looking for the Wendys. There's also a WalMart and lots of motels along I-95. Charlie and I have taken to phoning each other when we pass by Walterboro on the way to where we WANT to be--that's the joke.

Bill Fosdick - Apr 02,2009 Viewers | Reply
Don, I'm good either way but of course it will depend on what Mother Nature throws at us. I wouldn't mind meeting Glenn and it sounds like Rick's is a logical stopping place. But then I haven't researched the flight times as well as you have so I will defer to your more senior wisdom.

Charles Pickett - Apr 02,2009 Viewers | Reply
I hope we haven't put a jinks on the trip and you all end up at Walterboro, SC weathered in.

BUT the people at the airport are GREAT

See you all at S n F
My tent is packed and I should be there on the 13 th

The weather forecast for here, London, Ontario turns wet after Monday, for several days.

On that basis we are now planning on leaving on Monday (13th) and it will depend on the weather as to which way we go south, east of mountains via Erie, PA - Richmond, VA and Outer Banks ( my preference) or west of the mountains via Erie, PA - Lexington.

Have a home located 6 or 7 miles from either X-61 (bobwhite) or Orlando north. Spare bedroom, as well as Two other fold out beds. Two cars and a Boat. Might be of some interest to early arrivals. or a bad-weather refuge either end. I do not care about how many if nobody else does.

We're 8 miles NNW of Tampa on a lake and can park another 'rey (or more in a pinch.) Spare bedroom and lots of couch space.

It looks like I'll be driving down there on Wednesday, to work in Tampa on Thursday and Friday.
Cheryl will be flying down either with Jeff or US Air on Friday or Saturday. Probably will go set up camp at lakeland sometime on Saturday.
During the week, I'll have work paying for hotels, but is there somewhere I can drop my small 5x10 trailer with all our camping stuff for a couple of days? Its an open trailer and I wont feel safe leaving it at a hotel.

There is an orange grove near Howey in the Hills, Tony, that has ample parking space between the trees.

Kenneth Leonard - Apr 09,2009 Viewers | Reply
Tony - since you'll be in Tampa, you can drop it here. I don't promise security, but I'm comfortable leaving stuff out overnight. It's a cul-de-sac so no traffic past. Look me up on mapquest. 10523 Lake Williams Drive, Odessa, FL 33556.

Last minute update: Jeff (with pax Cheryl G.) and Bill and I plan to meet at the Dutchman Creek Marina in SC for lunch and MOGAS, then fly on south together.

Euclid Benoit and Tim blew right by KFCI (which had their 20 knot tailwind directly across the runway) and stopped at KPTB, about 12 miles to the south. From there they headed for the Outer Banks, and I think they plan to tour the Wright Boys' monument and then work their way down the coast on Friday.
