Not to change the subject, but while Lou Ann was feeding the gang at the SeaRey Gathering there must have been a 'One hour, first come, first serve Sale' at the local Brooks Furniture store on Havendale Bl., in Winter Haven. A local CFI on his way to Sun N' Fun with a news cameraman on board, decided he needed to check out the sale on the way over to LAL. He needed a new Lazy Boy chair!!!!! Attachments:

The pilot departed from Winter Haven Airport (KGIF). I fly around this airport every week and from the video I think he was departing off 110 headed East and had turned right to the crosswind when the engine quit the first time he then turned right again to the downwind while trying to start the engine. The driveway he turned into was at a Brooks Furniture store on Havendale Bl. in Winter Haven. Lou Ann and I drive by this store all the time.

    He did a nice job.

It looks to me like that first re-start really paid off - giving him that little bit of extra reach to find that road.

    Move over, Sullenberger!

The whole thing looks a little too far fetched for me. It took a long time for the first try for the restart, and they also had a lake on each side that they could have made with no problem, however they contiuned to fly toward an area with no place to land before they tried to restart the engine. It is also very far fetehed that they just happen to have all of this video equipment running at the time. I'm sorry but I just don't buy this story.

Joe, It appears this one is real. Video equipment is getting pretty common in planes these days. Even in seareys! Attachments:

Could it be the resurgence of the Limabug??

Dave Lima - Apr 22,2009 Viewers | Reply
That's what I was thinking, something bobbing in the fuel system.

I guess it's easy for me to judge sitting at my computer and not being there. However my first reaction would be to head toward the water, rather than taking a chance at trees, cars and power lines, no matter what type plane I was flying. If it is real, they were very lucky that everything worked out. It's really hard to see the power lines from the air. This is just my opinion and I have been wrong in the past, just ask my wife.

I think its absolutely real and well executed.
When video is shot straight out the front, it makes it hard for us to see what the pilot is seeing. I belive he could have ditched into the lake at almost any time if he needed to. The video doesnt really show the lake on his right side.
I would make ditching in water a last resort in a land plane - its way too easy to get trapped and drown.
When the engine quit he established a good glide, looked and chose a direction, and then when he had that all worked out he tried for a restart. Good thinking - just as it should be done!

Your right Tony, after looking again it does look like they had the lakes as an option most of the time. I should have looked better before I opened up a can of worms.

Joe, Don't worry about the worms. It much more fun to discuss an engine out when everyone and everything came out OK. Now about landing missing a wing.....

If you noticed Davis tries to restart the engine while looking off to his right that's where he wished he could have gone if that engine would have stayed running. Runway 4 is insight but too far and he would have headed back over a lake to make it. Meantime, his passenger is trying his hand at starting the engine but Davis knocks his hand off the switch with his right hand and control stick, at this point Davis sees the road in front of him is clear and just wants to get the plane down while he can without hitting any street traffic. It was a good thing it was Sunday morning before the churches let out or that street would have had cars all over it.

He made a first class landing, hat off to the chap.

As a long time Winter Haven resident I have never seen Havendale Blvd that deserted, Sunday am or not. And Joe V is right about the inability to see street crossing power lines from the air. That street is criss crossed with power lines - notice heavy development on both sides. I believe that it is real but they were verrrrrrrry lucky.

I subscribe to the old adage 'any landing you can walk away from is a good landing', so that was a good landing.
