Thanks again to Randy Palma for recommending the iPhone app, MotionX-GPS !!! He said he was going to try it out on a transoceanic flight and will probably report on it when he can.

But I couldn't wait. The weather finally cleared and I had a chance to try MotionX-GPS in the air today. I tried both the track function and the app's ability to email waypoints at regular intervals as long as the iPhone has a good cell signal.

Emailing waypoints turned out to work very nicely. It was set to send them at 15 minute intervals, and that's exactly what it did--until I flew into a dead spot where there was no signal. It gave up there, and apparently did not resume sending waypoints when I got back to where there was a good signal.

There was one other problem with sending waypoints automatically: Before leaving home I cautioned Carol that waypoints would stop coming to her if I got out of range. Normally, she just seems to figure I'm a goner every time I go flying and doesn't worry, but this time it was different. After receiving 5 waypoints, when they stopped coming just at sunset she got worried and started phoning people to see if they had heard from me. So it's a useful feature, but needs to be used with a lot of care. I should have phoned her.

The track feature worked perfectly. It uses the phone's GPS for the location and just keeps track of the locations, without any need to send out messages. When I got back to the airport I told it to send, and it did.

The body of the message it sent out is below. Where it says, 'Click on this link to display the track in Google Maps,' THIS is the link:

http://maps.google.com/?t=p&z=15&ll=37.40658950805664,-77.51826477050781&q=http://api.motionxlive.com/motionx-remote/api/gps/host/7786a
a08-f343-49bd-8a38-744e4e569002

UNFORTUNATELY, MyFamily isn't displaying it properly, so YOU'LL HAVE TO COPY AND PASTE. It begins with 'http' and ends with '9002'.

The attachment that it says will open in Google Earth is attached here also.

=====start=====

Hello,

Don Maxwell uses MotionX-GPS on the iPhone 3G or 3GS and is sharing with you the following track:
Name: 2010-02-14 SeaRey.Flight
Date: Feb 14, 2010 4:29 pm
Distance: 115 miles
Elapsed Time: 1:31:26
Avg Speed: 75.7 mph
Max Speed: 114.0 mph
Avg Pace: 00' 48' per mile
Min Altitude: 0 ft
Max Altitude: 1,581 ft
Start Time: 2010-02-14T21:29:22Z
Start Location:
Latitude: 37.406590º N
Longitude: 77.518263º W
End Time: 2010-02-14T23:00:49Z
End Location:
Latitude: 37.406719º N
Longitude: 77.518240º W

Click on this link to display the track in Google Maps. This flight began and ended at KFCI, near Richmond, VA. I flew southeast to the James River and then downstream to a friend's place, where I did a splash-and-go. Then I flew west to Lake Chesdin and followed it to the western end. (The last waypoint was sent just to the west of the lake.) From there I flew farther west to 2VA3, Merlin Aerodrome, and did a low pass from north to south, passing Aventura Matt's house, the last one on the southeast. Then I flew straight back to KFCI.

Don, Are you sure Carol wasn't just looking for someone to fill your Valentine's dinner reservation slot?

That is way to cool. I have a lot of trouble downloading iTune apps to the Droid, uses a different system (so they tell me). Then again, I'm not the best at using that thing.

Scott, do you know about The Missing Sync? I don't know about the Droid, but it's very good for the iPhone. Lets you sync Notes and ToDos and can migrate stuff from many different PDAs. http://www.markspace.com/products/android/missing-sync-andro
id.html
