Hi all,

I bought the recommended 4' SC4 HID landing light, but after installing the AveoFlash LED nav lights I'm thinking about LED landing lights now, and would like to run the wiring while the wing is opened up.

I'm not planning on night flying maybe only a couple times/years, but I am a big fan of 'Lights on for see and avoid.' and am wondering if the LED lights give enough output.

TIA,

Steve

I'm no expert, but LED's are a dirext, narrow spread light, albeit bright for the load.
I bought an LED work light and found it absolutely useless, unless pointed DIREXTLY at a very small area of work. That was not what i wanted, trying to light (say) the whole area under the front dexk. SO, unless it points dirextly at you, or someone else, I imagine it is not as easily seen as the old faithfull. Running lights on vehixles work as they point AT on xoming traffi, but the 'loom' is non existant from an angle/

HID has more 'punch' than LED. for a landing light I would go with the HID. I have a 10 watt
HID dive light that is brighter than my car head lights and projects out further too.

Hi Steve:

LED lighting systems are making good progress but they are not yet a realistic answer when it comes to aircraft landing lights. HID systems still provide the best landing light solution as they put out a much more powerful, concentrated beam. LED landing lights may look adequate in a sales booth but leave much to be desired 1/2 mile from the threshold.

HID lighting systems have also fallen dramatically in price over the past few years.

Best,
Larry

So far, my experiences with LED flashlights have suggested that the technology has room for improvement.

When you start seeing them on car headlights, then I'd consider one for a landing light.

What a great topic for a Serious Seaplane Site or a SeaRey Technical Site...unless you want to talk about romantic lighting for a SeaRey camping trip, in which case the softer light of a LED just might work! Moonlight would be even better.

You got it Dan. There is a thorough discussion in Aviation Consumer about LED landing lights and new products from Teledyne announced at ACS. I am sticking to 35W halogens BUT, I use a wig/wag system for visibility. This has a number of advantages. BETTER VISIBILITY, Lower power consumption. Lower bulb life. CHEAP
Sure you can you use HIDs BUT, they new a place for the power supply and a warm-up time for use in a wig-wag system. You will probably need to have a start-up timer and synchronizing line between the 2 lights.
See my posting on the technical site of July 18, 2009. Photos&p=SZRJO0000

HI Dan,

I started a thread about this on STS on 31 July but only had 1 reply, so I thought I'd try here.
