I am Bob Langkawel and live near Tuscaloosa, Alabama. I am new to the SeaRey community and am just starting the adventure. My wife & I are looking for property in the country that we can build a grass strip on. Can anyone help me with the dimensions the runway should be? How wide should the runway be from trees on either side? How long should it be to be safe and comfortable? Thanks.<!-- >'"><br><font color=red size=6>' or &gt; missing in user HTML.     Bob - There is a great owners only site where we discuss these kind of things. Which of course does not help the many folks in your position. For answering those questions, we encourage folks to email individuals back channel. (it's a long saga, but another company was using public technical discussions about the searey on the predecessor to this site to badmouth the Searey.)<br /><br />I'd be happy to chat with you off line about my experiences with the searey - understanding that my advice is worth what you pay for it - nothing.<br /><br />Others frequently also volunteer to talk back channel also. -Ken <br />KNSLeonard@yahoo.com

Bob, You can never have too much runway. There are no simple answers for your questions. Factors include winds, surface conditions, clear or obstructed approaches, aircraft weight/load, engine type, and probably most important - your own skill, experience, and risk tolerance. Also keep in mind that aircraft manufacturers' specs are based on perfect conditions with highly skilled pilots at the helm.

Bob, Ken and Eric are right. But maybe we can be a little more specific without getting technical: A SeaRey needs less than 500 feet (by 40 feet) to take off and alight, land or water. However, almost every pilot I know needs at least twice that and at least 3x to feel comfortable, maybe 4x. That's if the approaches are open on both ends. So if your acres were 100 feet wide, you'd need at least 3 of them in a row. But you'd also need forgiving neighbors. And a good lawnmower.

Or a hayfield with a plane friendly owner. That's what we use when we fly to the Crossroads Grill just north of Lake Hickory. Of course it's only open when he's not growing hay and it hasn't rained in a few days.

Bob, I have the perfect place for you and right now you can get it for a mere $700K. Imagine, over a mile of water runway in all directions with no neighbors on the whole North side of a beautiful private Central Florida lake no better place in the world for a SeaRey we can even help with the financing. Imagine getting up in the morning and walking out your back door opening up the doors to a hanger big enough for two SeaReys pulling your SeaRey out and take an hour long flight before breakfast. Go ahead leave it parked on the lawn until the sun gets low and then jumping back in her for another hour or so before the sun sets. Imagine that and I've been doing the very thing for over a decade, living the dream and it can all be yours.
