I believe this discussion is on the sun n fun thread but I decided to start a new one so we can find it later when it a non-WUFF day and we don't know what to do. Based on this, the best idea is get the plane inside or to a hard tie down.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Loq1olceSIE

Thanks, Dennis. That seems to be a valid test. My own rather flaky tests in Virginia a few years ago turned out similar, although I ended up not liking the augurs as much as they did, because they're very hard to screw into dry, firm soil. But if the pull is sideways on an augur it comes out hard, too. As they say in the report, it all depends on the soil composition.

How about this? You can even make them

http://www.stormforcetiedowns.com/Why-Choose-Storm-Force_ep_
43.html

Dennis, you might try the tie-downs I made in 2005. They're similar to the Stormforce ones, but quicker, easier, lighter, and cheaper: Photos&p=SZYAO0000 (That's on STS.)

Dennis,

I have to say that I knew absolutely nothing about tie downs, not having yet purchased a set for our Searey. However, after being loaned a Claw set at Sun n Fun, I ran out and bought my own. Our Searey went through 90 mph winds and held solidly in one place. I am a convert!

The Claw looks like a good design to me for the footprint size is what is needed. The screw in type have a very small footprint and relies on you screwing them into the ground at an angle to give them a claw like effect. I think if the Claw had a larger footprint and longer rods for the use in sandy soil like we have in Florida they would be a very effective way to secure low wing aircraft in anything but a tornado. I think high wing aircraft don't stand much of a chance in high winds no matter what you tie them down with.
