I've been working at the Tavares Seaplane Base for over a year now, and often times my
passengers want a recommendation on where to go for lunch after our flight. Just about every
time I send them to Al's Landing. My students and I review our flight lessons over snacks at
Al's and when my family is visiting at the base I take them to Al's.
Apparently Al's isn't as seaplane friendly as I originally thought.
I pulled up the ramp and into the parking lot today and did an idle turn to park next to the
Twin Bee. Joey the Prop Shop manager was outside guiding me up the ramp. I shut down the
engine and heard someone yelling loudly from Al's 'WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! SEAPLANES
CAN'T PARK THERE!! GET OUTTA HERE!' I looked at Joey with confusion and we both
shrugged it off. As we walked into the Prop Shop the attendant was just hanging up the
phone. He said that it was a certain manager from Al's calling to complain about the seaplane
that had just come up the ramp. Joey said my prop wash didn't lift a grain of dust.
I don't mean to rant, but after sending them so much business it's a shame to see them treat
me this way. I won't be sending them any more business and I hope you all think twice about
eating there.
If this isn't appropriate for the website I understand and will remove it.

P.S.
I ate at O'Keefe's today and it was EXCELLENT.

Greg - totally appropriate. Would be interesting to chat with them about what has them upset. Perhaps it's just one jerk? Perhaps a joke? Not the owner but a drunk customer? If one of our crew has a heart-to-heart with their ownership and they really are asses about it, then I'll be sure to stop by and tell let him know who & why I do business with and what that ramp was built for.

Did you see my plane down at the end of parking area, Greg? I was in Al's with Kerry and the PA gang having lunch when you came in. At the next table was Bill Neron from the City of Tavares and Steve McCaughey, the new Executive Director of SPA. The owner of Al's was there talking with them about how great it was to have seaplanes on the ramp.

There was no negative reaction to your arrival from the inside dining area. There was one angry lady sitting outside. Maybe she said something to the bar tender.

That makes me wonder what the manager that complained was doing. I know the owner didn't do the complaining because he was still at the table after you and Tom left for Okeefe's.

There have been instances where seaplanes have started and blown a dust storm into the restaurant. That didn't happen with you, but I'll bet the Lake did some damage blasting out today. Maybe there should be some change in parking procedures to keep from blowing away outside customers.

It's important because SPA is planning a major seaplane fly in at Tavares. They hope to have 50 seaplanes in attendance.

How about if you and I meet with Al's owner and see if he shares the view of the complainers? Then we can talk to Joey about how to keep other amphibs from creating future problems for us.
Dan,
The complaint came earlier in the day when I initially met with Tom (around 11AM). It definitely was
one of the general managers (I won't name any names but I know who it was. Not Rodger haha). I
would like to meet with them sometime.
I was thinking earlier, what if I showed up to Tavares for the first time and as soon as I shut down my
engine I was getting yelled at by the restaurant? Not cool.

Dan is correct, they do have a potential problem with dust, I have witnessed the dust storms with heavier aircraft. Perhaps the powers to be can work out a solution.
Maybe a low fence, signs, etc. Too bad you got caught up in the dog fight....

The person that did you wrong is just jealous that he doesn't have a seaplane. He must have been picked on in high school.

I agree with Ken and Dan. I have never had a problem and I do go there often.
Tolerance is something that most people never acquire, sometimes we are too quick to
judge a company by the actions of just one person. Maybe Mr. High Horse was getting
a reaming from the owner later that day.
I almost always sit out side. I have never had a plane blow dust or dirt on me. some
people are jerks like (Mr. High Horse) and over react to situations.
I really dont that the ownership shares the opinion on Mr.HH.
But, if it turns out that management really does feel that way I'll be the first to do my run
up right on the ramp and show them what dust and dirt is really like.

I can honestly say u have better control than me Greg, I hope this doesn't happen with me because
the end result for mr. high horse wouldn't have been the same

Getting angry just plays their game, David. Get even. Or even better, get more than even. Double up and go over them. It will be good for your blood pressure when you get older. Greg and I will meet with their boss and the City Manager next week. Then we'll give him something else to blow up about. Maybe he'll blow his top and get tossed out, eh?

Someone who builds a restarant on a seaplane base, ( two actually) and does not like seaplanes is akin to someone who buys a house on the ILS to OHare and does not like the noise. I know where the city manager stands, I believe the owner does or will agree after Dan's meeting

I thought Tavares claims to be the "SeaPlane Capital" of Florida, the USA, or the world?? Presumably to attract seaplanes.
