This is for you guys north of the border.....

There is a 16 year old who is going to try to be the youngest to fly an amphibian (185 on amphibs) across Canada, west to east. I've exchanged emails with him, as I noticed his route will take him straight across Maine to Halifax. He has asked me this question:

'I am not sure if we are crossing over the U.S. do you know the regulations on that? I am technically not allowed to fly in the US because I only have a recreational licence!'

Can anyone help on that? Can he overfly Maine, as long as he doesn't set down anywhere, or what are the regs here?

Here is his web page:

http://crosscanadasolochallenge.ca
Mark, get him to check with COPA. They should be able to advise him about the regs.

Well, he took our advise and contacted COPA. Here is the answer he got:

Matthew:
You cannot fly outside of Canadian airspace on a recreational permit. We tried some years ago to get US acceptance of our rec permit in exchange for Canada accepting the US Light Sport Pilot certificate but neither government would budge. Sorry.
Good luck with you adventure. I will be watching.
