    Here's a glassy-water landing that surprised me a bit: <a href="http://youtu.be/gWLWxEU0aEQ">http://youtu.be/gWLWxEU0aEQ</a>

So Don, the 'step taxi' was done in the air?

Eric Batterman - Nov 30,2012   Viewers  | Reply
Frank, that was called a lucky flat turn in the air.

    Indeed Eric

Yeah, Eric's right: it was a flat turn in the air. The thing was, I had trimmed full nose-up, more for practice than for need, as I was solo. That meant I was pushing, all the way down, and I think that made it harder to tell whether I had alighted than if I had been flying in trim. In trim I'd expect to feel the 'stiction' drag when the step touched the surface, but I never felt it this time, even when I bounced and came back down for good. (The bounce was very gentle and probably only an inch or two high, but seemed to last a long time, maybe because I was surprised.)

Don,<br /><br />What headset and audio gear are you using? I am amazed at <br />the lack of background noise.

Don Maxwell - Dec 02,2012   Viewers  | Reply
Bruce, I was using a Zulu headset, with one of those Oregon Aero leather muffs on the mike. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.aircraftspruce.com/pages/av/headsetx_microphones/micmuf.php">http://www.aircraftspruce.com/pages/av/headsetx_microphones/<br>micmuf.php</a><br /><br />https://<a href="http://www.oregonaero.com/p6465c-2001.htm#gp">www.oregonaero.com/p6465c-2001.htm#gp</a><br /><br />And, of course, the engine was throttled back.

Thanks for sharing that Don. For us newbies to seaplane flying it is a real eye opener! I felt like I was there.<br /><br />This unique and dangerous sensation reminds me of the other unique and dangerous flying sensation; vertigo or unusual attitudes in IMC. Both fool the senses. Both are very subtle and both require training and practice so that they don't 'bite' you!<br /><br />Yor video demonstrates that well!

Dan Myers and I went out practicing glassy water landings <br />yesterday. <br />It is challenging to tell when you are down... <br /><a href="http://youtu.be/4ej10Lm05nk">http://youtu.be/4ej10Lm05nk</a><br />

Excellant video Jerry and Dan! The view in the upper right corner really allows <br />demonstrating the Glassy Water Phenom!

Excellent video, Jerry. I've copied most of this page to STS, where we can have more technical discussions: <a href="http://www.myfamily.com/isapi.dll?SiteID=DQiYAM&ContentID=ZZZZZLZE01&c=Content&htx=View&bPreview=1&ContentClass=NEWS">http://www.myfamily.com/isapi.dll?SiteID=DQiYAM&ContentID=ZZ<br>ZZZLZE01&c=Content&htx=View&bPreview=1&ContentClass=NEWS</a>
