Tom may kill me for making this, but I drove 1,200 mile round trip to go fly with him and see if I could start to learn about the SeaRey before showing up at the door step of PA to buy my new Elite. It's amazing he doesn't have grey hair after trying to teach me to land it on the runway. The water part seemed a lot easier. He was most gracious, informative and forgiving as I S-turned across the runway. The only time I was on centerline is while passing across it! But I had a grand day! Attachments:

Steve, I can't open this link. It says it's a youtube video but windows 8 can't find an app to open the link. If you have this loaded on youtube there should be a youtube share url for it.

The filename extension is 3gp, which probably means it's formatted for a cellphone. But in any case, I can't figure out a way to download it.

Steve, you can just post the file here, instead of the link. If it turns out to be a really huge file, after a while we'd ask you to remove it or make it smaller, but if it's a phone video it's probably fairly small.

    Terrific video, Steve!

It's just ordinary SeaRey flying, though. Ho-hum.

Well, okay, that's not so. But I think we all have a great first-SeaRey-flight video like this one, even if it's only the memory. Mine is similar--one of my best airplane rides ever (right behind my own SeaRey's first flight).

Glad you liked it Steve. I was born in Oakland and grew up in and around LA. I moved to Florida after I built my SeaRey in 97. Tom's in Riverside County so what lake were you guys on.

Sounds like you're hooked Steve. And don't worry about S-turns on taxiways or take off,
they are part of the process and believe it or not, will soon be forgotten.

Steve, you did fine. You were just trying to use your J-3 skills on a SeaRey Another hour and you will have mastered SeaRey wheel landing skills. You are an awesome stick and a pleasure to fly with.
Russ, we were on the Thermolito Afterbay, below Lake Oroville.

Thank you Tom, but in reality, the SeaRey was the most frustrating and difficult tail wheel machine I've ever flown. Having flown the D-18, Howard, super Cub, J3, Great lakes and DC-3, I can not fathom a more unstable machine than the SeaRey. Perhaps the Elite is more stable ? My demo ride left me with grave doubts on the reasonable Cockpit size, rudder peddle length and head room that obviously can not accommodate a 6'2" pilot.I remain confident the Elite SLSA model will rectify this problem.<!-- >'">
' or > missing in user HTML. You're gonna be just fine. Remember, it was blowing 10 to15 kts and it was hot and bumpy. Not an easy day to transition. The Elite will have the pedals set to your length, the seats are lower, and the instrument panel will be 2 1/2' higher than mine. These differences will give you plenty of room.

I tried to watch your video on my Ipad and McTube said you need to unlock it for mobile viewing.

Thank You all for my New Boy quest to buy a SeaRey. It's clear I need to go sit in, fly and experience the Elite, it's sizing and performance prior to buying it. I will attempt a trip to PA to do so. For me this is a top end purchase, and the SeaRey Elite needs to fit what I think is worth $150,000.000+ ! To buy or not, is dependent on Cockpit space, Avionics choice, color options and customer support. P.S. it would be appropriate to have a formalized performance document ref. the Elite from PA also.<!-- >'">
' or > missing in user HTML. Steve, you sound like kind of a big guy, what are your goals and expectation for all your possible choices as far as weight limitation and performance go? What of the other possible choices have you flown and what did you think about them?

Steve, I know of at least one SeaRey pilot at 6' 4' and 240 lbs.

    Hi Steve,
I am 6'4' and 220 lbs. The new SLSA will feel dramatically different from the one you
were flying in. As Tom mentioned, the new features allow for more comfort and space. In
the classic Rey, my knees were always resting against the panel and I had to position
my feet underneath and past the rudder pedals. In the SLSA, I am completely
comfortable and not sitting on top of the pilot or bowing my head down everytime I try to
open/close the canopy. Once you make it to PA, and demo with Kerry, You will see a
solid difference

Steve.... I am a friend of Tom's and have flown with him many times in his gorgeous
SeaRey off the Sac River and Black Butte Lake. Butte County California can have some
interesting thermals but I can attest that the SeaRey is a machine that works well once
you have gotten used to the switch. I have built two other sea planes (one a boat plane
called Adventure Air and a SlipStream Genesis on amphib floats). The SeaRey was
better than both of those hands down. I am 6'1' and after the seats are positioned right
you will feel great. Joel Dacus Dallas Texas
