AHOY !!!
We're having a
splash-in cook-out
on
Sunday, October 13
and we hope you can come!

  • Seaplanes!
  •

Good fellowship!
  •

Fun and Games!
  •
Lunch around noon. Nothing fancy, but plenty of good grub: BBQ, grilled burgers,
hotdogs, etc., etc.
LOCATION

The Taj Mahouse, in Shangri-la-di-da, on the James River, a few miles east of Hopewell VA. We're on the east side of Jordan Point, just SE of the Route 106/156 Benjamin Harrison drawbridge. (Google "tar bay va"

Coordinates: (These coordinates may indicate the wrong house in some online maps. Ours is white; 2nd pier from the south.) 37.305000 -77.215000 ------------------- 37º 18.300 -77º 12.900' ------------------- N37º 18' 17.77" W77 12' 53.29"
Radio frequency: 123.45
Phone: 804-543-7110
Email: SeaRey@AbstractConcreteWorks.com
Street address: (Google it for an aerial view of the river and the correct house.) 10463 Jordan Parkway North Prince George, VA 23860

FRESH WATER but 2.5 ft tide High tide on October 13 is at 10:22 AM and low tide at 5:28 PM, so the water should be plenty deep enough for larger seaplanes until at least 3:00 (2:00 for PBYs).

SeaReys, Aventuras, and other small tailwheel amphibs can taxi onto the sandy beach. Nosewheels and floats should tail in. PBYs and Clippers anchor or tie up to the buoy in deeper water, and we'll pick you up with the Large Marge Party Barge & Self-Propelled Seaplane Tender. (Only 1 buoy, so bring an anchor if you'll need one.)

 Maps and low-tide info: http://abstractconcreteworks.com/TajMahouseSeaplaneOps/TajMahouseSeaplaneOps.html

Fun and Games? If anyone's interested, we might try grapefruit bombing or short takeoff, but only if it's going to be fun for everyone. We have a volleyball, too (somewhere).

RSVP so we can get a food count. Otherwise… take your chances on the grub.

We're looking forward to seeing you on the 13th of October!

= Don & Carol Maxwell

P.S. If you don't happen to have a seaplane handy, the roads are quite good here. And W96 (New Kent County Airport) is a few miles to the north. (Courtesy car, or we can pick you up. Call us to coordinate rides.)

P.P.S. Please pass this on to other seaplane pilots who might be interested in coming.

Rain Date: if the WX sux on October 13th, we'll try again on November 16. And if that doesn't work, then on November 30. (The weather is usually still warm here then.)
Those are the best midday high-tide days.

POSTPONED !!!

New Date: Saturday November 16 10:30 - Dark

EXPLANATION Pbbbbt! I called the weather too soon. The leftovers from tropical storm Katy are sticking around longer than I expected, giving us rain and a constant north wind for the past three days. And this is the time for spring tides--higher than usual--so the water has been really high. Here's a pair of photos to illustrate the situation today (Thursday).

About two weeks ago, normal water height: TIDES-TypicalTide+N123XM-10th

This morning: TIDES-KatyHighTide-10th

There's no damage, but if the wind had been from the east instead of the north, we probably would have lost some of the pier. At high tide this morning, waves were breaking over the top of it.

Also, there's been lots of rain uphill from here, and all sorts of hard, floaty stuff has started moving downstream. A lot of it is already on the beach and I can see more out in the channel, heading for France. It will probably keep coming for several more days.

And the forecast for Sunday isn't all that great. (Okay for seaplanes here, but maybe not good in Class E airspace.) Right now it looks like low ceiling, rain, and mist Friday night and into Saturday morning. That will probably blow off early--if it happens at all--but the forecast is ceiling 500-900, less than 3 miles, and 40% chance of rain.

So it seems best to postpone.

The next weekend-good-tide date is Saturday, November 16th, when high tide should be at 14:06 (2:06 PM) EST. The weather is usually very nice here at that time. Last year's splash-in was on November 10th and was a lovely day.

Low tide should be at 08:04 that day. So no matter what the wind is like, there should be plenty of water for everyone everywhere between 10 or 10:30 and nightfall. (Sunset: 16:57 EST).

So let's figure on lunch around 1:00.

We hope you can join us!

=Don & Carol

P.S. There are plenty of M-F good-tide days this fall. You're welcome to splash in here any time, any day. I can get onto and off of the beach at low tide (except for about 3 or 4 days a year, when the water gets unusually low), although occasionally a passenger has had to get out and walk, coming in, because it's uphill. In any case, it's always easy to tie up to the buoy or anchor and we'll pick you up on the Large Marge (party barge and self-propelled seaplane tender).

Splash-In Update<P>I've been watching the weather for Saturday, the 16th, and it's looking better all the time.<P>Still... I wasn't sure... So I asked THE weather authority: <P>"Siri, what's the weather for Saturday?"<P>Her answer came instantly:<P><img src="inline/10068-SiriSaturday_t.jpg" alt="SiriSaturday-t"><P>Good enough! Let's go for it!<P>High tide will be at 2:06 PM--almost perfect. Low tide is 8:04--so by 10 or 10:30 there should be plenty of water for everyone except possibly the Martin Mars and the China Clipper. (PBYs anchor in the channel or tie onto the buoy, and we'll pick you up with the Large Marge. Mars, Clipper, and bigger seaplanes anchor off the marina.)<P>I'll post a last-minute weather update Friday evening.<P>RSVP (so we don't run out of hot cocoa)<!-- >'"><br><font color=red size=6>' or &gt; missing in user HTML.     Hmm... The TAF for KRIC (13 miles north of us) is:<br /><br /> 4 SM BR SCT005 OVC010 until 10 AM and then<br /><br /> P6SM OVC 015 until 1 PM<br /><br /> P6SM BKN025 the rest of the day.<br /><br /><br />It looks a bit worse to the west and better to the east.<br /><br />So what would you say about postponing until Saturday, November 30 (Thanksgiving weekend)?<br /><br />We're going to be here both the 16th and the 30th and will be delighted if you can make it either day--or both. <br /><br />The important thing is to have fun and not take unnecessary risks.<br /><br />=Don &amp; Carol<br /><br /><br />

Let's postpone it until 30 November 2013.<br /><br />Here's this morning's TAF at KRIC:<br /><br /><br />KRIC 161133Z 1612/1712 VRB03KT 4SM -RADZ BR BKN004 OVC015<br />FM161400 09004KT 5SM BR BKN008 OVC015<br />FM161800 16004KT P6SM OVC020<br /><br /><br />WE currently have broken at several thousand feet and occasional direct sunlight. But the sky to the to the north and west looks fairly ugly.<br /><br />Pbbbbbt!<br /><br />If the 30th is sunny and mild, it should be a great day for a splash-in. So let's postpone it until then.<br /><br />High tide on the 30th is at 12:37--which is perfect for lunch around noon. <br /><br />But if you're flying this way today, I hope you'll splash in. We've got plenty of BBQ and the other stuff. Lunch around 1:00.

I think this fly-in is rigged, how come you get to change the days for your fly-in, that's not fair... I kind of hope the weather is bad on the 30th. also Don a week latter and I might get to fly up there. Good luck or should I say hope the weather is not so good on the 30th.

Don Maxwell - Nov 17,2013   Viewers  | Reply
No, Russ, it's not fair at all. But there are more planning variables here and no Sun-n-Fun to coordinate with. The 30th will be the last try until spring because the water is getting chilly now. The probability of warm and sunny here at the end of November is about 0.5 typically.

Don Maxwell - Nov 18,2013   Viewers  | Reply
Russ, if you really are coming this way, that'll be cool! We'll have a special splash-in in your honor.

Russ Garner - Nov 19,2013   Viewers  | Reply
Don, thanks a lot what an honor to me it would be for you to do that. I don't need any excuse to fly up there and see you guys after all you've done it so many times for me. I have been thinking about the trip for sometime now and really would love to come see you guys and I think it has to be a beautiful flight also. I even plotted it out the other night staying mostly on the coast and turning inland at Morehead. I guess you know I've been laid up with back and neck problems and had a couple of surgeries this year but I seem to be healing up finally. I plan on flying out commercially to CA Sunday to see the kids for thanksgiving and I'll be back on Dec 3. The other problem I've had is my King KLX 135a com/gps radio started giving trouble last year on my second attempt to fly to OSH which I have finally decide the gods do not want me there because the plane almost sank and the receive side radio stopped working. I use my handheld to receive and just use the King to transmit. Worked ok until a couple of weeks ago when I turned on the King and smelled something cooking under the panel. Garmin just came out with a new com radio GTR 200 targeted at the experimental and LSA crowd for $1159. I just ordered one from Aircraft Spruce should be here this week. I already have the King rack out of the panel and maybe I can get the new radio in before I leave for CA on Sunday, If not, I'll finish it up when I get back. I know it's getting late in the season and the weather is becoming a factor but I'd sure like to fly up there if you guys are up for some more company. If not this year in the spring for sure.

Don Maxwell - Nov 19,2013   Viewers  | Reply
You're welcome any time, Russ. (Except this week: Carol's 96 year old aunt is driving in from North Carolina today.) But for splash-ins, it's hard to find good weather in winter, and the water is pretty chilly from December until March. (We're trying for November 30th, but if that doesn't work we'll give up until spring.)<br /><br />If you keep to the coast as far as Moorhead City, why not go on to KFFA (First Flight Airport) at Kill Devil Hills and visit the Wright boys' memorial there? Or turn inland earlier--Georgetown KGGE or Cape Fear NC--and then we can fly together to FFA.

Russ, I installed my GTR200 a couple weeks ago, you're going to love it.

Steve, I may get ahold of you when I get back I have a couple of questions about the installation that you might be able <br />to help me with.

Sure. I've got a miserable schedule the next few weeks, so email is the best, but you can also try my phone. <br /><br /><a href="http://seareybuild.blogspot.com/2013/10/gitr-done-200.html">http://seareybuild.blogspot.com/2013/10/gitr-done-200.html</a>

What a beautiful Thanksgiving day it is here in Shangri-La-di-da!<br /><br /> Smooth Air - Riffled Water - Sunny - 46&#186;<br /><br />IF Saturday were going to be like this, but 60-something, it would be perfect for a late fall splash-in.<br /><br />Alas, that's not likely.<br /><br />No. All of the forecasts for Saturday predict a high temp in the low 40s and partly sunny or mostly cloudy or overcast. Same for Sunday. And the deep water temperature off the end of our pier right now is 45 degrees (rather cold for swimming--not a stopper in itself, but a factor to keep in mind when alighting).<br /><br />SO it seems best to postpone this fall's splash-in until spring.<br /><br />( Pbbbbbt! )<br /><br />Thanks for your patience, and please stay tuned for a spring splash. Have a great Thanksgiving!<br /><br />=Don<br /><br /><br />P. S. Unless the weather is really rotten on Saturday, I'll be flying locally, and the rest of the time my SeaRey will be parked on the beach. Carol and I will be home all day, hoping someone will come and join us.<br /><br />So if you're feeling intrepid and are looking for a flying destination on Saturday, lunch will be around noon. High tide is at 12:37 PM. The beach is clear and the sand quite firm. SeaRey size tailwheel amphibs should be able to taxi up easily and keep feet dry. We'll have boots and waders and can help floatplanes tail in. Nosewheel flying boat occupants will probably get wet feet, but not for long and can warm them in front of the fireplace.<br /><br />P. P. S. Actually, we're home most days and we'll be delighted any time you splash in here. We usually monitor 123.45 and answer 804-543-7110.<br />

Hah. It's sunny and bright this morning, with water and wind perfect for seaplanes. Cold, though--just above freezing down low and cold enough aloft to freeze wet landing gear. <P><img src="inline/10069-Ice_sm_s.jpg" alt="Ice-sm+s"><P>That narrow white band where river meets sand is ice.
