As new owners of a Searey but also in student mode we want to video both cockpit and from the outside. We have a GoPro Hero 5 camera and with an audio adapter, thinking of using that for inside video. Anybody have recommendations on where and how to mount a GoPro in the cockpit for best results? Also thinking of a GoPro 360 camera mounted outside somewhere on the struts aimed at the cockpit. Looking for recommendations on where and how to mount an outside camera. Thanks! Hal

Mounted my GoPro 8 (waterproof) to the headband and it provides an interesting perspective. Did not know how much I looked around while flying! I do like the results of other folks pointing from strut in. Also, one looking forward showing primary instruments allows better analysis for strange events.

Ken, thanks. Interesting video with the headband mount. I do have the headband that came from my original Gopro. I haven't actually seen our new Searey and won't until November 8th but I want to have the mounting hardware I need for the strut mount. Would you mind picking a location on your Searey strut where you would think a camera mount should go and attach a photo to this thread? I'd also like to know the diameter of the attachment point to buy the right mounting hardware.

Others have actually mounted and recorded from their struts so will know what works best. I will defer to them.

Hal, you don't need expensive mounts to make good videos. Inside the cockpit, almost any clampy thing will do. If you have a factory-built Searey, you might not be allowed to drill mounting holes in it, but glue or clamps ought to do fine for your GoPro 5 or any other lightweight camera. There are plenty of struts outside to clamp a GoPro to, too.
The niftiest locations I've seen for a 360 cam are well out in front of the airplane, with a tube or two clamped to struts to hold it there.
I don't have a 360, but often do mount a normal GoPro on a short length of square aluminum tubing attached to the right float strut, so that the camera is maybe 8 or 10 inches ahead of the standard float strut to give a clearer view of a passenger, as well as straight ahead. Here's a sample mount where the GoPro3 out there can see from a little right of straight ahead around to a little aft of the step. (The only shot I have of it. Stupidly, I forgot to point the camera down after pairing the remote control, but the location works well.) I tried a longer square tube, about 3 feet. But then I had to choose between the view ahead and the passenger.
And the video link may give you an idea of what you get with a head mount (sick), a cockpit mount, and a GoPro mounted near the back of the float.
If you have more than one camera, be ready to spend plenty of time editing.

Don, because I hadn't been getting email notices I never saw your reply back in October. I ended up buying a cheap set of GoPro mount knockoffs on Amazon and found one to strap to the main strut. It has worked out OK. See the video link of an edited version of the 360 wing camera and the cockpit camera.

Man, are you correct about the editing time! This video took many hours of my life.
Speaking of video links, I cannot find the one you refer to above.
Your idea of the cam well out in front of the plane makes sense. In fact, with the 360 I won't have the same trade-off to make of having a forward view vs the passenger or pilot view. (BTW, why passenger rather than pilot?)

Hal, your video is good viewing--and gorgeous scenery. (You can make a clickable hot link for it easily by selecting "Adv. Edit" and then "Add web link." Delete the link suggestion in the bottom line and paste your link in place of it. Give it a name in the top line.) Now I'm all the more tempted to buy a 360 cam. The added editing load is a real consideration, though. It's already enough work to tell a coherent story with the available video clips, without having to use a separate video editor for the 360 footage. I use Apple's Final Cut Pro for video editing and like it better than GoPro's dedicated app--but don't expect it will rotate 360 clips.

Don, I bought the Insta360 video camera because of the kudos it got on the video editing. Once you learn the app (note that it is an app for an iPhone or iPad) you can edit very easily, although learning it took me a while as I'm more of a laptop/keyboard guy than a phone/swipe guy. Totally agree that the complexity goes way up with more than one camera, but don't be afraid of the 360 by itself. Note that you can upload a 360 video unedited to YouTube. YouTube allows native 360 videos which are really cool as you can rotate the point of view yourself. The editing for a 360 consists mostly of rotating the view and putting down keyframe markers. After that the editor exports a video that smoothly rotates the point of view to the keyframe markers you have laid down. You can see one in my Channel on YouTube above. Note: I tried to use adv editing to add my channel and made the mistake of not deleting the 'http' mistake but I get an error each time I try to delete it. "Not Acceptable! An appropriate representation of the requested resource could not be found on this server. This error was generated by Mod_Security." I can't fix it.
