This is the August 2001 Kitplanes article that got me interested in the Stingrays. Ben Cole flew his to 49 states one summer. I believe he still has it in Georgia.      Attachments:

I think what Ben did was nothing short of amazing. He flew around the country stopping at 49 states including Alaska in a single place plane with no ground support following him and limited space to carry food, clothes or spare parts. That took a definite amount of guts.

Guts, indeed! But it must have been great fun for him. His story makes it seem that he was in a hurry to get the trip done, but that might have been just because he was trying to squeeze a long story into a few pages. On a trip like that you can't not have fun!

I agree Don, I think the story was way too abreviated in order to fit the magazine.

Great Article / Epic Flight - As an aside, intrepid Max Air Drifter pilot Lavern Dench flew on straight floats from Sebring to Oshkosh,
then to the Statue of Liberty, & back to Sebring. All he had was a sleeping bag, gas cans, 2-stroke oil, and a change of underwear.
He's helping out Lockwood at Osh this week & is an Amazing guy...

I remember in earlier days reading about one or two Buc XA's flying to South America without anyone following them either. I think Kerry's mentioned this before and probably could give more details.

It was Roy Zimmer and Bob Heideman. They flew their XAs from Orlando, Florida to Angel Falls, Venezuela. No GPS to help. Two stroke engines. More adventures than anyone could pack into ten books. Here's the story written before they left in 1992 (see link).      Attachments:

Thanks Dan! That's quite a read.... I would not have the guts for a trip a like that.

It was Roy that taught me to fly a light amphibian. He went with me to fly my newly acquired Buc II back from Keuthan's operation near Melbourne. On our way back I was low over the St. Johns River, having a blast winding my way through the curves...until I didn't. I didn't make the curve. Slammed it down on the water and slid into the far bank. Roy sat there through the whole thing with an inscrutable smile. I was shocked. He calmly said, "Well, you can't do that in a floatplane." We just took off and continued on.

Roy and Bob were both Navy Seals and saw combat in Vietnam. Roy never talked about that. I've never met anyone with such an unflappable outlook on life. Bob is gone now. Roy is a living, flying hero to me.
