Thanks, Dave. That's an interesting and depressing story. It's hard to hear the pilot consistently making the wrong decisions over and over again. But it's also distressing me to listen to the controllers' talk--and I don't know quite what to think about them. They apparently knew that the pilot was in some danger and they seemed aware that he kept getting closer and closer to it. But they never quite TELL him that.
On the other hand, pilots don't want to be bullied by controllers, either--especially knowing that many--maybe most--of them aren't pilots, themselves.
It seems to me that there ought to be some better way for pilots and ATC people to talk with one another.
Here's a sort of counter example that I came across a few minutes ago. It doesn't solve the problem, but maybe it does shine another light on it.

Don, I would say the controllers did excellent work with this guy. They gave him carte blanche to deviate, gave him multiple suggestions to avoid the weather (which he largely ignored) and never bugged him to turn back on course (which would put pressure on him). Sad story but I can't see how the controllers could have handled it any better.
