Carol and I hope you can come to the splash-in on Saturday, October 6th.

We're on the James River, about 5 miles east of Hopewell, VA, and 13 miles south of KRIC. The river is more than a mile wide here, although we're somewhat sheltered between two points and an island--on the far side of the sharp point with the bridge in the photo below. A red X in the center of the photo marks the spot. (Northeast is up.)

The early October weather is usually excellent here (but rain dates are Sunday, October 7 and 20).

Lunch around one.

A fuller invitation, with more info and photos, is in the link on the right:

The weather looks absolutely gorgeous for October 6th! The sky will be sunny, the water will be warm, and all will be well with the world.

Barbara and I will be winding our way back from a 5 week tour of New England states using only non-interstates. Who knows, we might even time it so we can be there but won't know until a few days before the 6th.

    Will that include Maine, Dennis?

Yep. So far Baxter State Park, Bar Harbor and Portland. Still planning the rest.

Your schedule probably will be tight but would be great if you had a chance to stop by my hangar at KOLD to say hi....but not sure your plans would take you through here if you're avoiding I-95....

Looks like we are planning on coming right through Old Town on our way to Acadia National Park. I'll keep this in mind and give you a call if we can stop by.

Mark, please send me your phone number. Use grease@roadrunner.com if you don't want it on here. Rught now tentative plans are to be coming through Old Town on 9/28. But we are bad about chasing rabbits that run across our trail. Thanks.

The weather looks good for our October 6th splash-in on the James River, east of Hopewell VA and south of KRIC.

The James crested this past Wednesday and most debris from hurricane Florence is well downstream now and on its way to Europe, so the water should be perfect for seaplane ops by the 6th. We've requested sunshine, a light breeze, and slight riffles.

Here's the complete online invitation, updated with new weather, etc.:

And (with luck) here's a weather map with a flag marking our place: Windy.

Runway 8--so the view is more or less to the east. The Dockside Restaurant was under construction.
Not long after this undated photo was taken, they plowed up the runway for a subdivision.
Our house was planted right on the numbers at the far end in 1990.

The splash-in went well—although the flight conditions were IFR all over the Mid-Atlantic until 9 or 10 AM. But by 10:30 the sky had cleared here and to the east, and the rest of the day turned out to be warm and sunny. Ten seaplanes (including mine) got here, and one landplane came to a nearby grass field, VA05.

This video shows the seaplane highlights and a bit of the human interactions, as well.

We hope for perfect weather next year!

Suitable noonish-weekend high tides in fall 2019 are:

DAY DATE HIGH TIDE TIME (13:00 is ideal) OFFSET HRS:MINS

(high-low spacing is very roughly 6 hrs.)

TIDE-TIME RANK
Saturday 07.September 10:43 2:17 4
Sunday 08.September 11:46 1:14 1
Saturday 05 October 09:11 3:49 6
Sunday 06 October 10:14 2:46 5
Saturday 12 October 15:10 2:10 3
Saturday 26 October 14:23 1:23 2

There are other considerations: For example, the tide is good on October 26, but that's pretty late in the season, when cloudy days are likely to be chilly. Another example: morning high tide means that floatplanes will have to be moved several times in the afternoon to avoid getting stranded.

September 7 looks good, even though high tide is near mid-afternoon. Early morning arrivals might have temporary trouble taxiing up across the beach if the water is unusually low. (It's always easier to get out than to get in because of the beach slope.)

September 8 would be almost perfect as far as water height is concerned. But it's a Sunday: Does that matter to you?

That weekend will probably coincide with the Greenville ME splash-in, but I don't know of any other conflicts yet.

Please let us know how those dates suit you and your thoughts on Sunday v. Saturday.
