Any Searey owners flying to Oshkosh this July? My plan is to fly from the Coast of Maine. Would love to pick up a few others along the way and have a "Flight" upon arrival!!!

Makes my arse sore just thinking about it, but I was thinking... what's your timeframe?

Randy Flood - May 30,2017   Viewers  | Reply
Tentative plans are to be Wheels up from Belfast Maine on July 21st. That give a nice buffer for bad wx. Would come home whenever
it makes the most sense.

DO it! Your route is too far north for me, Randy (and I may not go this year, anyway). But I have a couple of suggestions for you:

1. The weather will be coming at you from the west, so you may find it harder to find a good weather window going TO Oshkosh than coming home again, and you'll probably have to fly through two or three weather systems on the way west.. So I've found that it's good to leave early and have someplace to hole up out in or near Wisconsin in case you have good luck and get there early. Someplace you want to spend a day or two in for its own sake.

2. Consider camping at the seaplane base. That removes the need to queue up at Ripon and land three at once at OSH. At the SPB all you need to do is come in low and land on the water. Then call the SPB for taxi and docking instructions. There's no electricity in the campground, but there is at the base, itself. Hot showers. it's very pleasant camping, and there's regular shuttle service to the main show.

Be sure to read the NOTAMS, wherever you decide to land. Of course.

On the return trip, just wait until the weather looks good and you'll probably be in it all the way home.

Oh, yeah. Make sure your hull is watertight and that your bilge pump has an automatic mode.

Don...your comments are pretty much my plan!! Looking forward to the trip and the show. From your last comment I take it that
there is no place to ramp out of the water?? I have to stay afloat the entire time? (Have just started my research)

Jim has it right, Randy. There is a ramp, but only for temporary use. It's a seaplane base, not an amphibian base. Just check your Searey once a day, and it should be okay. Be sure to check after a heavy rain, because that's when water can run down the pylon and into the hull. An automatic bilge pump should keep the hull empty. But if you notice that the tail is floating low, suspect water in the aft section of the hull, where the bilge pump can't get it. If that happens, just press the nose down (or raise the tail) until that water sluices forward into the bilge. Happened to me once there. Be sure not to take off with water in the back end, or you'll have a very bad day.

But I don't mean to worry you. It's just another checklist item. I always go the the seaplane base instead of landing at the main show.

Randy, Yes she'll float in the bay the entire time your there. They will bring you out in a john boat to check it. If you stay at the SPB, bring plenty of bug spray for night time. There vicious!

Jim.....All good items to know ahead of time!! Many thanks.

Randy, I'd like to talk to you about this Saturday when you come up. Also, we are planning on getting those docks in the water tomorrow so they'll be out of the way coming up the ramp.
Did you get my email regarding landing on the river?

Randy Flood - Jun 01,2017   Viewers  | Reply
Don: Thanks for the info. Am hoping my work schedule will allow me the time to make the trip.
Mark: Got the email. Thanks and will be on the look out!! I plan to land at the airport and then walk down to see the ramp. Will text
you upon arrival to hook up.

I am thinking of going. A couple of things
1) having done this in 2012, Don is right about Wx. I would add expect strong head winds.
2) as to seaplane camping. No beaching of acft. After my 2016 partial thinking, letting it float out in the lagoon isnot an option.
3) PA conducts demo flights out of the lagoon.
4) if the wind is from the East over the lake the swells can make it sporty getting your SR in there.
5) I took the southern root across OH IN up to MI and across Lake Michigan. Some go via Chicago. Others take the northern rout
over the Great Lakes. Which way are you planning to go?

Don't want to park overnight in the green slime of the seaplane base? Commute. New Holstein (8D1) is about 16 east of the seaplane base. It has both paved and grass runways. There is a good hotel in town (or you can camp at the field). You can even rent a car at the local dealership if you call far enough in advance. And that's the real problem. The Super Cub guys like to use 8D1 for their gathering. The hotel and limited car rentals can get overwhelmed. A minor problem is that if the weather is bad you have to drive around the lake to get to the show. Or you could just hang out at New Holstein and listen to Cub stories.

New Holstein is a nice airport. But I've also considered (but never tried) 11Y, Flying Feathers, a small privately-owned public field near Chilton. There's a Best Western in Chilton, and you could probably arrange for a rental car to be delivered there.      Attachments:

Sadly......pride goeth before the fall!!! For my own self, I need to be able to say I flew into Oshkosh!! (It is a personal flaw of mine,
but I am working on it, therapy and the like). Have to say, not to happy with leaving my bird in the water. Think we are going to bite
the bullet and land on the balls!! But fear not.....I have an "Experienced Oshkosh" pilot as my right seat! Will let you all know how the
adventure unfolds.
