. AHOY !!!
We're having a SPLASH-IN cook-out on Saturday, September 26, 2015 and we hope you can come!
Seaplanes! Good fellowship! Fun and Games!
Lunch around 1 PM. Nothing fancy, but plenty of grub: BBQ, grilled burgers, hotdogs, etc., etc.
LOCATION The Taj Mahouse, in Shangri-La-di-da, on the James River, a few miles east of Hopewell VA. We're on the east side of Jordan Point, just SE of the Route 106/156 Benjamin Harrison drawbridge. (Google the coordinates below or "tar bay va")
Coordinates: N37.305000º W-77.214900º N37º 18.2090' W077º 12.8966' N37º 18' 17.45" W077º 12' 53.79"
Radio frequency: 123.45 Phone: 804-543-7110
Email: DonMaxwell@AbstractConcreteWorks.com
Street address: 10463 Jordan Parkway, North Prince George, VA 23860.
Fresh water, but 3 foot tide. High tide on September 26th is at 2:14 PM. Sunset will be at 7:00 and low tide at 8:54 PM.
ARRIVING Look for the orange windsock on our pier and call "Taj Mahouse" or "Maxwell" on 123.45.
If the wind is from the east, please consider approaching over the trees between the marina and the houses instead of right over the houses. If the water is glassy, one good approach is to use the small, flat island in the middle of the bay as your LVR. Here's a quick video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96n2kH3tqwA&feature=youtu.be
SeaReys, Aventuras, and other small tailwheel amphibs can taxi onto the sandy beach or onto Neal's lawn next door, with plenty of room. Use plenty of power on the sand.
Nosewheels and amphib floats probably should leave the gear up and tail in. (The tide will start going out around 2:20 PM, and you'll probably want to be pointed outward by then.)
PBYs and Clippers anchor or tie up to the buoy in deeper water, and we'll pick you up with the Large Marge Party Barge & Self-Propelled Seaplane Tender. (There's only 1 buoy, so bring an anchor if you'll need one.)
Maps and tide info: http://abstractconcreteworks.com/TajMahouseSeaplaneOps/TajMahouseSeaplaneOps.html
Fun and Games? If anyone's interested we might try grapefruit bombing or short takeoff, but only if it's going to be fun for everyone. We have a volleyball, too (somewhere).
We're looking forward to seeing you on the 26th of September! If you need to RON, no prob.
= Don & Carol Maxwell
RSVP if coming.
P.S. If you don't happen to have a seaplane handy, the roads are quite good here. And W96 (New Kent County Airport) is a few miles to the north. (Courtesy car, or we can pick you up. Call us to coordinate rides.) There's also a private 2,000 foot grass field about 2 miles north of us. Let me know if you'd like to land there and I'll put you in touch with the owner.
P.P.S. Please pass this on to other seaplane pilots who might be interested in coming.
Rain Date: if the WX sux on September 26th, we'll try again on the 27th. And if that doesn't work, then on October 10.
Those are the best midday high-tide weekend days here this fall.

John, the address is above, in the Coordinates section. (The one motel I do NOT recommend is the closest one, the Evergreen Motel.)

Just a reminder: it's on September 26th--4 weeks from today.
The Pope will be in Philly that day, so anyone coming from New England should watch out for a big fat TFR. (New use of "See and avoid.")

The weather is looking good for the 26th. The early fall air is warm and clear (well, for Virginia), the water is pleasant, and no hurricanes are in sight this year. Let's party!

Well, pbbbbt.
The forecast for this weekend doesn't look very good for a splash-in: cloudy, cool, windy, and probably rain.
So let's postpone it for two weeks, until Saturday, October 10.
We hope you can come that day. Please let us know if it's okay for you.
=Don and Carol
Backup date: Saturday, October 24.

At least we have a couple of backup dates. But the UCI bike racers will just have to pump through it on Saturday, no matter how hard it rains.

Seaplane Friends,
I apologize for this--but I think it's best to postpone the splash-in until Saturday, the 24th.
But it's a tough call. Each individual factor is acceptable, but put them all together and there's a reasonable possibility that the 10th will be less than ideal for a splash-in. Or at least, that the 24th has a better chance of being a nicer day for it.
The weather forecast for this Saturday, the 10th, looks okay, but not wonderful: it's probably going to be cloudy and chilly most of the day. The beach doesn't have much sand after the recent nor'easter but the water level is returning to normal. There are some logs to move off the beach, but they're manageable. I didn't see any big floaters when flying upstream today, so there probably won't be significant debris floating past on Saturday. High tide on the 10th will be at 2:26 PM, which is okay if the water is normal height that day. But the forecast for Friday night shows a prolonged wind from the southwest, which is likely to produce low waters on Saturday morning, when the tide is lowest. Also, several people have told me that they couldn't come on the 10th, but could on the 24th.
(Sunday the 11th is not a good day whatever the weather because high tide is not until 3:04 PM--meaning that the water will be low-ish all morning. My Searey can taxi onto and off of the beach at low tide, but it can be tricky.)
There's a risk in postponement, of course. What do we know about the 24th? If it's sunny, the 24th should be a very nice day. High tide will be perfect: 12:58 PM. The rest is just averages: The average high is 71. October typically is the driest month. And the water should still be warm enough for swimming should the need arise. Also, the following day, Sunday the 25th, has almost as good tide timing for a backup date.
So Carol and I hope you can join us on the 24th. We'll plan on lunch around 12:30-ish. It will be helpful if you can let us know if you're coming.

Arrrrgh, indeed! Sorry, Chuck. Can't change it back now, and in any case, when we finally got a low-ish tide--this morning--it turned out that there's a lot of waterlogged sink-y stuff that ended up blocking access to the beach. I'll get some of it out today, but probably not all.
Third time's a charm! (I'm not superstitious, but am optimistic.)

The third time really was a charm. (But I'm still not superstitious.) The weather wasn't perfect--high overcast, mid-60's, 8 kts, 10 miles (i.e., slightly chilly)--but good enough for:
4 Seareys (including mine) 1 Seabee 1 Zlin Savage Cub 1 Aventura II 1 Maule 32 humans (total)
Jeff Arnold (Searey) flew the greatest distance this year, from Claytor Lake in western Virginia. Second place, Ed and Melody Searle (both are pilots, Aventura II), from very close to FFA, in the Outer Banks (with the doors off!)
Dennis Scearce drove the greatest distance, from Mooresville, North Carolina. Second place, Mark Callender (whose Searey is close to flying now).
Loudest exhaust award (tie): unidentified Searey, large, 4-place flying boat (also unidentified) Quietest exhaust award: Zlin Savage Cub Greatest Sacrifice: Allison Blankenship, who broke her arm early that morning
Good Eats: Carol Maxwell, Julie Westermann, Nancy Nichols Beach and lawns: Neal Blankenship, Brenda Johnson Duckwall Photos: Kevin Manning and several others

Here's how it looked to Kevin Manning's drone. Most of the revelers were indoors at the time to finish lunch and get out of the wind.

The blue tarp helped stabilize the sand so that no one would get bogged down. It was also an aiming point.

Jim had to go flying. The Savage Cub has a huge skylight and two big doors with big, probably the best visibility of all floatplanes.
