If you like adventure, check this out: http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog-entries/southernsun/1/1427875113/tpod.html

Michael Smith is currently en route from Melbourne, Australia, to London, England in his Searey LSX. He has already crossed more than 400 miles of open ocean and landed on the equator, far far from solid ground.

(Thanks to Pat Larrain for finding it!)

    This was my dream trip!
Fly from Sydney (birthplace of my Searey and WW2 seaplane base) to Poole Harbour in Dorset England, (birthplace of me, also a
seaplane base in world war two). Take my parents for a fly, then turn around and fly back to Sydney.
Kept it under my hat as I thought most people would laugh and say not possible.
Major respect to Michael.
I am 1 1/2 hours from Bangkok and there for work in two days. Hope I can connect if he is still there.

    Hi Pat
Do you have any contact info for Michael?
I tried to send a message via his blog but it didn't work.

Marty, there's an email address for him on STS > Members > Smith > Michael. It looks like it might be a good one.

I have been looking at Michael’s flight path earlier in his journey before he left the Australian shoreline, and have noticed in one day
13th April he flew from Wollongong to Rose Bay (Sydney), then to Cessnock refuelled and flew direct to Longreach, this would have to
be some sort of record flight time of 10 hours and 46 minutes of flying. The Cessnock leg to Longreach was over 673 nautical miles
and 8 hours and 20 minutes of non-stop flying in a Searey!
Anyway I am loving reading his reports each morning.

Many months ago, I was asked about some ferry tanks I had identified on the old searey site. It was in reference to this flight.
If they used what I had found, the turtlepack products come in many sizes and shapes but a 25 gal barrel will fit in the passenger
seat of a searey (or should) and have 150 lbs of gas. If you burn 4 GPH at long range cruise (easy in a 912, not sure in 914), you
have 12.5 hours of fuel. (Assuming you can get 25 gal in the main tank). If you really had to go nuts, you could probably shoehorn
a 33 gal in seat and another 10.5 under nose deck. That's 17 hours @4gph. With the 912Si at less than 3.5 GPH, you would have
about 20 hours aloft. Figure 80mph at max endurance power = 1600 miles

TurtlePac fuel cells are Great - Don't think the 25 Gal will fit, but I routinely fly back & forth to Massachusetts every year with their 10
gal Buddy seat back bladder to supplement my old 18 gallon tank (my bladder can't go longer). They are very high quality certified fuel
cells...

David, I think Dan Nickens knows has the skinny on Michael's long-range tanks. At least one of his entries mentions something specific, like 7.5 hours non-stop, and my impression is that he really can go longer than that. It's a good discussion for STS.

When I was down at PA in May, I heard over lunch that Michael's airplane had side bladders and could take on something like 70
gallons of fuel. The rumor was that he was planning an around the world flight.

Michael has just finished an epic flight 10 hours and 39 minutes from Riyadh airport Saudi Arabia to King Hussein International Airport
in Jordan, a stone's throw from the Israel border.. Can't wait for is report!

I received an email from Michael yesterday wanting us to keep his adventure low-key for the moment. He seems to be in two minds,
he would really like to share more of his story but needs to be clear of Saudi airspace, and I think a little bit closer to his goal London.
Michael did say he would contact me shortly with regards to publicity of his adventure.

This is an email I just received from Michael. I'm sure he won't mind me sharing it with you.

Hi David,

Now that I've made it through Saudi, which I was a bit worried about to be honest, and my Israeli security clearance has come
through this morning, I'm happy for the story to be shared now - if we could just hold off until I've landed in Israel please, that
would be great. (Which is tomorrow)

The only thing to be aware of is now the sightseeing starts a bit, I'm taking 4 days in Israel, a week in Croatia, and then a week in
Italy before making it through to London, which I know is a bit slack.... Anne is flying with Qantas to join me in a few spots - but
not flying any legs with me, because a) she doesn't want to, and b) i need the weight for fuel, and c) I'm keen to compete this solo.

Let me know if you need anything from me. I just want it to be clear that I kept it low profile because it was a personal journey, not
a publicity exercise, but as so many people have found out about it and want to share it, I'm more than happy for people to do so.
I'm chuffed people are enjoying it.

Cheers mate

Update..Received an email from Michael today.... Michael is extremely happy to be safely into Israel and out of Arabia......He now
has four days off and is happy to answer any questions we may have.

I have already asked him what are his plans when he reaches London, which he replied...

(Regards London - there is currently no plan. Once I meet Anne in Italy, we'll discuss options, which are really boiled down to keep
going, turn around come back, tour Africa then decide, or take wings off and ship home in a container. But haven't decided, need to
balance family, work, etc.... And I partly didn't plan as I wanted to see how the plane held up.)

So if you have any questions post here and i will pass on for you.

Hi Don, received your email re: Michael Smith this morning and sent a reply however it bounced back. Anyway here is my reply.

Hi Don,

Wilco, I have a funny feeling he will continue his trip, but as he has informed me before he will take some time off to evaluate his
position. If it was me I am sure I would be keen to fly to the states. Anyway will let you know of any updates.

Thanks for the rebuilding encouragement, there is a lot rebuilding to do, looking at considering a new kit or hoping to find
somebody who has given up building their LSX.

Thanks, David. Odd that it bounced, as that's my main email address. Michael's Searey appears to have enough endurance for the north Atlantic crossing, even east to west against the prevailing wind. I hope he goes for it.

Great news Michael has finished his epic journey from Melbourne Australia to Southhampton London. He landed at 1256 GMT 11th
June.

Thanks Michael for sharing the trip with us on your blog site it was fascinating reading.

What an epic flight, sure wish I was there to meet him. As an Australian I am so proud of his efforts and his trusty Searey. I am
sure there were a lot of people that told him it couldn't be done. Well done Michael you show them!

I am having a celebration drink right now, Cheers!
