Date Posted: Nov 18, 2007 Description: On the bay side of Padre Island, the Laguna Madre is as flat as a salty pancake can be. This 110 mile long estuarine and coastal marine body of water is not part of any river. That means it is particularly sandy and salty. It is the size of Connecticut and though called a lagoon, it is only wet during the highest of tides. It is in fact often only the direction of wind that determines whether it will be flooded at the highest of tides. The Laguna Madre is on the migration route of the endangered artic peregrine falcon. There was no chance of seeing one, however, because they hunt in the dim light of early morning or late afternoon. They like to feed on exhausted warbler and flycatchers that struggle in from the sea. Exhausted by their long flight from the Yucatan, they must make it to the mainland. First, however, they must cross the killing ground of the flats. Date Taken: Nov 18, 2007 Place Taken: Padre Island, TX Owner: Dan Nickens File Name: 6_Far_Flung_Flatness.jpg - Photo HTML
