A breakthrough! Instead of looking directly at a dangerously undiminished sun, lakeshine from a blackwater lake should complement the dark bite of the moon....or not.

With the gathering gloom of rapidly growing cumulonimbus all around there was only one hope to see the darkening sun...climb towards the light!

What's that sticking up there? A single finger of fickle fate? A comic message to the futility of chasing after darkness?

The brilliant, blinding light easily overpowered the shadows of an interloping moon shadow. One could be moved to song....
"Oh I've been chasin' a moonshadow moonshadow moonshadow Leapin and hoppin' for a moonshadow moonshadow moonshadow..."
Or maybe not.

In the end a shadowed 90% was nothing compared to the brilliant 10%.
Then the batteries in the headset quickly died, eight total in quick succession. The face plate fell off the radio. The engine charging system quit charging. The tail wheel extension cable failed. The aft hull scraped on the ramp.
Some might say my planets were not aligned. It could be that my moon was just slightly off kilter. A bad moon rising? Whatever. There was still plenty to see. And, well, there is still 2024 to look forward to. (So says a slightly smarter fox.)

What I've noticed is that everything looks quite bright right up to the instant of what they call ""second contact""--the first moment of total eclipse--but the quality of the light is unusual. Beginning around 80% or 90% totality it seems ""thin"" to me. Maybe pale is a better term. Whatever you call it, it's not ordinary daylight.
