Description: Lake Algonquin, Wells NY. Stopped this morning for coffee at Lakeside
General store. This beach is right behind the store.
Great people there. I haven't been in this lake by seaplane in 20 years. I
used to have a Lake amphib and it was tough getting in and out with it and
the Lake amphib was loud and I couldn't go in early morning to be
respectful. They told me they didn't hear me come in. I love that the Searey
is quiet enough to fly early in the morning.

Terence, did you fly southbound down lake George a few weeks ago? Saw a Searey on vacation. Will be back up there in
two weekends. If you are on the area Aug 12, please stop by our beach. We are 4 miles south of Hague. Van Buren Bay
on West side. Big flagpole next to 100 yr old adirondack cottage. I will be up there next summer with the plane.

I have been putting some hours on the Searey locally haven't

I have not been up near Lake George yet. I really don't plan
on going in Lake George I think you have to buy a permit to
land on Lake George. If I get a permit I might take you up on
that.

It's like $10 for the day and you can get it online.

Brian - thanks. Makes me angry that NY presumes that people must be controlled such.
I need to look up the definition of "gratuitous guest", but since I have a wallet they can grab, I doubt I fit.

I have been in the north end of the lake twice, and never got approached. I think most of the concern is around the south end, with
all the drinking and such. FYI to all reading this, it's a BIG lake with sometimes BIG swells that can blow up in minutes. Like the kind
that can pop a windscreen out of a Seabee. But that's another story for another time.

Oh, do tell! Yes, when I was there five yrs ago giving rides to my family, we were landing in whitecaps occasionally. Not exactly how
I would prefer my passengers experience their first water landings but they all loved it. They hounded me every summer to bring
her back up.

Reading the regulation, it appears that if I cannot prove that we had continual annual use of a seaplane facility since before this
regulation, they won't issue a permit. In other words, the clear intent is to forcefully stop all seaplane operations other than touch
and go. You cannot park in any way shape or form. Including mooring, beaching, ramping, docking...

NY is a state full of regulation. It is regulated so much it is hard for people to start small businesses and make a living. It strangles the citizens with regulation.

I can't honestly say it's why I left NJ, but it is one of the reasons I wouldn't move back to NJ,NY,MA,CA,IL.

Ken - would a 17 day code orange golf TFR shutting down much of NJ (starting tomorrow) entice you back?

Seaplanes are horrible critters aren't they? Especially compared to jet skis, wave runners, and boats that take on water to create
humongous wakes. Gracious! It must be due to their highly trained and certified pilots.

Me thinks they frown upon us because our propellers sit harmlessly above the waterline...Therefore, we do not churn up enough
water critters to chum the water for the bigger game fish...

Good plan, Terrence--but if you're planning to stay overnight, look for a reservation now. (Or last January.)

I am finding that out now.

Since Don was there one of our seaplane guys built a hotel in town ( Best Western Plus) Mention that you are a seaplane pilot and you should get a discount. They have a shuttle to the ramp and activities and it walking distance to museum.

Great news about the new hotel, Kevin (although the old ones are quaint and comfortable).

Where are you parking your Searey these days at Hammondsport? We've parked on the grass near the SE corner of the lake and also on the town beach, by the old RR station.

I usually park on the ramp and give rides from there but keep it there overnight.

Just checked with hotel and they have 4 rooms left for seaplane pilots for weekend. about $159 a night special for us for king suite. I will be there Friday night only and participate on events during the day Saturday but have to go to a wedding Saturday night.

Don Maxwell - Aug 06,2017   Viewers  | Reply
In the past, there's been camping space available at the southwest corner of the lake. You might phone the museum and inquire.
