Heavy traffic on the James. Freighters and tankers ply the river here now and then. This time there were two ships passing in the afternoon.

In the channel alongside the Tar Bay Archipelago. Carol and I call the longest of the islands ""Wake Island"" because of how we and Aventura Matt and Debbie were picnicking on it one day when a heavily laden container ship passed going fast, and the wake first drained the river bottom dry between the island and the channel--and then put all that water back double-high, tossing our airplanes almost too far up the beach to get them off again. It was another Seaplane Learning Experience.
You can read the original ""Wake Island"" story beginning here: http://searey.us/splash/?Photos&p=SZV0J0000 Click on ""Next"" to read the other four installments of it.

Hopewell, VA, has seen better times--and worse. During the last year of the Civil War, General Grant had a supply depot here, and it's said that for about six months it was the busiest seaport in the world.
Right now the view is improving, and there's even talk of a city-owned seaplane base. And there's this restaurant under construction on the bay where the Appomattox flows into the James. There's a motel on one side and a hospital on another. There's to be a new walkway along the river from the marina (out of sight below the camera) to the newly restored Beacon Theater (out of sight beyond the hospital).

Don, Consider how lucky and fortunate you are to have experienced all these things because of one little ole thingy you built and fly, and after your retirement!

On the nose of this big baby is painted ""ANNIE"" so of course all I could think of was ""Take a load off Annie"" (even though the original lyric probably had it as Fannie).
Read about (F)Annie here: http://forward.com/culture/355808/one-of-the-greatest-rock-and-roll-songs-of-all-time-was-inspired-by-a-jewis/
And the lyrics are here: https://bobdylan.com/songs/weight/
(The ""Wake Island Story"" link doesn't belong here--I put it here by mistake--but it won't delete. Must be immortal.)
