Description:
One of the best thing about New Zealand is it's avid culture of aviators. Mike Carlielle, with SeaRey rego ""SRY"" that lives at North Shore Aerodrome, invited me to visit a traditional Kiwi Bach with an untraditional road doubling as runway. Mike told me the road could be easily identified by its runway markings. I knew El Jefe was out playing golf, so I flew off to see what a good road runway looks like.
(Bach, pronounced ""Batch"", possibly as in ""bachelor pad"", even though most are small family holiday homes).

Mike showed me how it's done. He lined up and headed down the road (which is also downhill).

The airport overlooks the Kiapara, one of the largest (and shallowest) harbours in the world. Since half of it is exposed as mudflats at low tide, it isn't as busy as other harbours. That makes it great for SeaReying.

Baches became popular with the advent of automobiles. Kiwis could head out to their favourite beaches on holidays and hang out in inexpensively constructed, small structures typical of backwood cabins. It became so much a part of the culture that there is actually a reconstructed traditional bach at the National Maritime Museum in Auckland.
This property has a nice collection of cabins (covered travel trailers), complete with running water, electricity, cooking facility, outdoor toilet with scenic view (open towards bay), and an open air bathtub. It's very cool but is slated to be replaced with a "flash" house on the bluff overlooking the ocean.

One of the neighbors is building his own bach, starting with the landscaping. Figures. He's in the landscaping business.

Great place, Dan. Why is N415SR in mufti? Is she trying to fit in with the locals? Or does she need wardrobe help?

Good ol' Henry Porter! In finding his name (the very first time for me--thank you!) this alt-opinion also turned up: https://medium.com/@mirautweets/when-in-rome-just-eat-the-damn-chicken-parmesan-265766e0fb6a#.8uc8kd2un

A disease of the spirit? No, the chicken Parmesan will be just fine (but without vegemite, please).

I love the way that runway gets the wiggles and then disappears over the hill. (Sorry, the site won't let me post a reply to the ""Mike showed me how it's done"" photo.)
