Description: My first assignment every morning is to check out the airplane (for myself) and the local area (for the guests). Parked on the lee side of Tongoa Island I was hoping to find a protected area for SeaReying in the likely case of a wind shift later in the day.

As might be expected from volcanic islands, some of the beaches are ash black.

The islands around Tongoa were once just one until a big volcano blew the big island apart leaving fragments of smaller islands (or so I'm told...could be legend).

Not a suitable beach for Seareying.

A broken up beach had some nice sand suitable for SeaReys.

Coconut plantations are a primary source of income for some of the islanders and large corporate interests. Some of the plantations have cattle ranches associated with them. Even with coconut palms this beach did not look particularly idyllic.

When the wind and waves did pick up during the day SuRi's captain decided to relocate. Where to? Send a SeaRey to find a nice parking place seemed to be an obvious plan. I gladly accepted the mission. Searching took me north to a larger island, Epi, and its attractive affiliates.

To really know whether an area is suitable for SuRi's seaborne recreational activities you have to get down on the water.

Is the sand suitable for discerning guests? Only a barefoot investigation can confirm it.

Ideally the beach should be completely deserted. In some cases, however, it is not so bad to share it with an old tree.

Sharing the sea with discerning natives of an aquatic persuasion is always worthwhile.

Scattered around the islands were some small government issue airports. They were all laid out the same way. Having an outhouse is a nice touch for visiting pilots and passengers.

Late in the day clouds that had blanketed the top of the local volcano all day long disappeared. It was too late to fly over the crater, but not too late to see that some of the clouds were not water based.

To get back aboard we had to cross the island. On approach to SuRi the air was filled with large birds flying in erratic paths. Closer inspection found the wings were not avian-like at all. We were sharing the sky with flying foxes.
