I just bought a 1997 searey and would like to find someone close to Tulsa with some time in a Searey!
Thanks Chris

Can't help you directly, Chris, but you might find better help on STS, the Searey Technical Site. If you're not already a member, click on "Help" in the second line of this screen and add your kit number (serial number) when you fill in the form there. (The STS administrators will need your name, email, and kit number.) Then you should soon receive email from goclub.us about how to log in as a member.

I did yesterday, I guess it takes a few days. Are you the Don Maxwell with all the searey videos on you tube?

I like your videos. You seem to be a very good searey pilot; any important tips you can think of? I have lots of mooney time and a few
hours tailwheel, but only one water landing (with the seller) so far. I just got the searey sunday. My email is roach2761@yahoo.com
any info is appreciated!

Chris, we try to keep this site fun and discuss Searey technical matters over on STS--as you'll see when you get on there.

But here are a few simple things to keep in mind when flying any Searey:

1. Get a seaplane rating. You can do that in your searey, but it may be easier to do it in a floatplane, and the basics are similar for floats and hulls. There are differences, however, so get Searey transition training, too. I see you're in Florida. That's good because there are several excellent Searey instructors there, mostly in the Orlando area. And Jack Brown's seaplane school is in Winter Haven. You can post a query about instructors on STS.

2. Searey is a high-lift, high-drag, low-mass airplane, so it gets slow fast when you close the throttle during a landing. In that regard it's very, very different from a Mooney. I think it's a good idea at first to keep considerable power on while landing--about 3000 or 3500 rpm works well for most situations. That prolongs the landing, of course, but it also slows the changes; and it gives you plenty of control authority. Adding power is almost always the best remedy for swerving during a landing roll-out. You can learn to do power-off landings later. Landing with power makes a land landing essentially like a glassy-water landing (which you'll learn to do while getting the seaplane rating).

3. We've developed a mantra for staying safe in a Searey: POP WUFF 70. That stands for Power Out (on takeoff)--PUSH. Wheels Up For Flying (always). 70 mph prevents accelerated stalls when you're down low and distracted by bikinis, etc.

There's lots more to say about flying Seareys on STS. Here, we focus on the fact that it's the most fun airplane of all.

Awesome thanks. Im not sure how i put florida. I'll have to fix that. I live in Tulsa, OK!

You should be able to get into STS now, Chris. If you can't find transition training locally, I think some of the Florida Searey instructors are willing to travel for instruction, and some can do both SES and Searey.

Chris, as soon as you log into STS, check this link: http://searey.us/sts/?Reviews&p=72CI09rcT&l=72GKFMttf It has just the info you're looking for.

(A day or so ago you should have received email from goclub.us, with something about STS in the subject line. If you can't find it, email Eric Batterman--you should have received an email from him a few days ago.)

Or do like I did. Fly down to florida, spend a few days with a Searey instructor.
